Portugal (Albufeira) or Tenerife (Los Cristianos)

Looking to have a weeks holiday 30 Aug - 6 Sep this yr as can get cheap flights to either place and will book private owned apartment. Have never been to Portugal but went to Tenerife when i was 19 for a clubbing hol - so completely different to what i would be hoping for in a family holiday!!!! Anyway I am 27, my husband is 30 and will be taking our 3 yr old. Want nice food, good "nightlife" (ie nice restaurants and evening entertainment in them or family friendly bars) and lots of local attractions. Has anyone been to both - can you recommend one over the other? Appreciate the advice. Havent been on a european holiday for years so not sure what to expect with a child. thanks.
