Valley of Fire entrance fee is now $10 per car. Still well worth it, but I wouldn't recommend returning to LV via NV167 in the near future as there are major roadworks going on with various sections requiring you to follow a pilot vehicle.

$10 is still an excellent price IMHO.

Definitely well worth the $10 and I reckon the 67% hike from the $6 it was last year is all down to ease of payment (for those of you who haven't bean, it's an honor system where you put your cash in an envelope at an unmanned paystation), as all the prices are multiples of $5 for non NV residents.

You can book excursions locally to VOF. Hotel concierge will be able to advise or just pick up the many booklets in hotels. I've hear of Pink Tours or Pink Jeep Tours, but haven't used them.

If you are hiring a car you should be cheaper booking in the UK before you go with http://www.ch3000.com or http://www.netflights.com as you can pay all your insurances in advance which is cheaper than doing it there.

As Luci says there are various companies that do tours from Vegas to VoF. Chances are the guides will be able to point out numerous things that you would miss out if you went there by yourself but can't beat the flexibility of not being part of a tour.

As for other places to go, it really depends on time of year and how active you are. Red rock Canyon is closest to Vegas
(and you get to visit the excellent Red Rock Casino) but the hikes are not as good as other spots. Spring mountains and Mt Charleston have some excellent hikes (only about 30-40miles north of Vegas) with snow up to early/mid summer!

We always book a car for the full duration in Vegas - want to get out and about the region and relying on taxis/Deuce/Ace/ monorail is not for us. Best to book from the UK and most people recommend Carhire3000.

I think a lot of people on here use http://www.netflights.com for car hire. They are excellent and are usually very competitive with the added bonus of pick up/drop off at the hotel of your choice.
