HEAR HEAR..DAVEYJP...
i will tip when i want to and not because somebody else tells its the thing to do..

No one is saying you have to do anything! If you want to tip personally then that is your choice. What was being asked was how others dealt with the tipping but if you want to book Select Dining then you MUST pre pay tips.
This is obviously you will have different tables with different waiters etc. I don't have a problem with this.

Is it true that we in the UK pay more than those in the USA for the same cruise? If this is true (don't know if it is) then maybe we are paying our tips without realising!! X

Not always, sometime the UK prices are lower sometime by a lot.

eg minsute Epic TA Oct 2011 UK £544pp, US £860 (after convertion and adding tax)

Personally, I think it's high time that all the cruise companies get together and include thips in the fare.

That might not suit everyone if there was a huge price hike.

great idea... :cheers ...just so long as they do not increase the fares to pay for the tips..

hi...keela1eva2...but then you the customer could decide if they were going to use any cruise company...
i really hate being told how much i should tip by the cruise companies they should pay their staff properly out of the .."huge" profits they make . now i am going to top my drink up..

Try looking at the financial reports and the profits per pax person per day,

Often lower than the tips.

A few cruise lines actualy run the ships at a loss and sre totaly dependant on te on board spends to make up the difference and make their profits.

AIUI paying the wages of a lot of crew off the books(via tips) also saves tax.

I always get my own breakfast anyway, ( I'm a big boy now :) )and I agree with all those who have their gratuities removed from theit account. I am a seasoned cruiser with Princess and I always opt out of the auto tip much to the disgust of our American cousins who regard tipping as a way of life

Must admit I am happy to tip, however I like to chose what I want to give and to who I give to

This may be true but I believe those booking in the US have less protection in law if the holiday firm goes bust. There's a lot of discussion about this on other holiday message boards.

US TAs usualy act as agent so the cruiseline takes your money so you can be safer than the UK.
If the cruise line goes bust you don't cruise so it does not matter who you booked through

I have been pricing up RCI and celebrity (you can switch between UK/US pricing) and they are about the same.
I have seen UK prices lower than US on RCI,celebrity and NCL ( I check these most often).
