You cannot compare prices on Crete to Those on Rhodes or other islands.
That would be like comparing a smart London pub to one in Newcastle.
Maybe in Rhodes Town or Lindos the unwary tourist might be ripped off .About €5 is cost of a large beer.

hmm, yes you do have a valid point there :), thankyou.

Could you tell me what the basic prices are in Pefkos, ie for a soft drink, small beer, food?

5 euros is about 5pounds isnt it. 5pounds is a bit expensive for a beer, unless you mean in more upmarket restaurants.

I have been told it is cheaper to eat and drink in Pefkos than it is in Lindos.

A large [500ml] glass of local beer should not cost more than 3-4 euro [but just be aware on a recent trip to Corfu town we paid 7 euro for 2 halves... broke the golden rule and did not ask for a price list] Imported beers/ciders can cost 10 euro per pint but can be found cheaper, its your wedding so you chose where you want to have it and let the others worrie if they want to go or not,

In all the years I've been going to various Greek islands (they're my fave holiday destination) we've never paid more than 4 euros a pint. As has already been said, unless you're going somewhere a bit upmarket prices range between 3 or 4 euros. I was oin Turkey this summer and prices there were more expensive than Kephalonia where my sister went.

If it was me, I'd definitely be sticking with Rhodes ;)

Hi yummymummy,
I only ever have the odd night in Pefkos as I tend to holiday in Lindos. Lindos is said to be more expensive but i've never been charged £9 for a beer! The cost of living in Greece is not ridiculously high but it is part of the eurozone so when the exchange rate is poor you get less for your money. A large beer in Lindos costs €2.50-4.50, even in a nightclub i've never paid more than 5. Some of the restaurants I visit are on the pricey side (a holiday treat) but on average I pay €15-20 a head for 2 courses including wine.

Pefkos is definitely cheaper, I hear you can easily get a meal for 2 with wine for €25. On top of that you also get promotions such as happy hour in the bars and set menu deals in the restaurants (one or two were advertising 3 courses for €7.95). You'll be pleased to hear that £9 a beer is not the norm, in fact the only places I can think of that might charge anything near that are the 'rip off' bars in Rhodes Old Town. That's not to say all bars in the Old Town are a con but there are a few that give the place a bad name.

Hi Shirley :cheers , thanks for your help, and i will definetly be sticking with Rhodes, such a lovely place.

marcuschap72 - very encouraging to hear the prices aren't as bad as some people say. To be honest, if the prices are around the same as they are here in the UK then why should we complain?
Thankyou for your help.

Yummymummy whoever's told you that is talking rubbish,i work in Faliraki and the most expensive beers here are 6 euros but that's for premium bottles like bud and mostly in the clubs,on average we charge 2.50 ish for a pint of 'local' which is often amstel,3 euros for a bottle of amstel, mythos or heineken and 4 euros for top notch beers like stella and the alcopops, spirits are usually 4 euros but 241,cocktails 4-5 euros and also 241 and wine is usually no more than 2-3 euros per glass.

Whenever we've gone out in Pefkos for a change we've looked at the prices in most of the bars and they've been the same or less than in Faliraki, and food prices are also very cheap, especially compared to the UK,you'll find things like pasta dishes and basic greek dishes for around 6-8 euros,a greek salad for about 4 euros, meat from the grill between 6 and 15 depending what you order and so on,i suppose the average 3 course with a couple of glasses of wine would be 20-25 euros, but for 3 courses and drinks that's cheap, but you could have a really nice meal of 2 courses and a beer for a tenner if you wanted and not suffer in quality.

As for £9 for a beer, there are some bars on the island charging this but you'll find it's only in the more upmarket bars in the old town in Rhodes and that price will be for Bud,Stella etc or the pints that come in the foot-shaped glasses,or if it's spritis it'll be things like smirnoff blue label and the like, these prices are also seen sometimes in the bigger clubs like paradiso or the casino but you'll find it rare even so. Remember that Rhodes old town is a magnet for not only cruise passengers but also the rich and famous from Greece and elsewhere with many of them having yachts or villas on the island but as an average tourist in a resort you're so unlikely to find prices like this, even in Lindos.

As for Crete and other islands,i've been to more islands and resorts than i can count and aside from the ones that are known to be expensive(mykonos, santorini etc and places like the old town)i've never known a beer be anywhere near what people have told you, most places in Greece are exactly the same, just like you can go out in the west end of london and pay less for a beer than you will in a pub in the north of england,it's all about shopping around, but pound for pound and despite the bad exchange rate,Greece is still cheaper overall than the UK.

Turkish resorts aren't 'silly cheap' anymore like they were up until say 5 years ago,we go to Marmaris 3 or 4 times per summer and the prices are more less the same as in Faliraki.
