Not sure what you can do as it was a private let. Unless you can get hold of the owner and voice your concerns regarding their agents actions.

And I suppose it is always possible that the problem was genuine but that turned out not to be as bad as they first thought and it was repaired more quickly than expected? Unless you can prove that the apartment was in a rentable condition all along then I'm not sure what you can do about this after the event.

When you say that you were opposite the original apartment, do you mean in a different block? In which case do you know whether any of the other apartments in that block were actually occupied that first week or was the whole block empty? Or was it within the same block as you finally ende up staying in? It could still be legitimate if the apartment was let for what should have been your second week as a late booking. Did you attempt to contact the agent while you were out there for an explanation and if you did what was their response?

Was this a letting agent acting on behalf of an individual private apartment owner or on behalf of the owner of the whole block? Either way the only way to try and find out if others have experienced the same problem with this letting agent is to name them - otherwise nobody is going to be able to help you find out if

they do this all the time to get more money out of people
