Can recommend stays in Sedona, Tucson and worth venturing up to the Canyon de Chelly, In my book an ideal arrangement would be a week in Sedona, a week touring and a week in Tucson.

From Sedona you can manage a day trip to the Grand Canyon.

Actually, Busdriver Sedona's the place I'd thought of for 1 of the weeks so good to get your endorsement. I'll follow up your other suggestions.
Both Holiday rentals & VRBO (thx Luci!) have loads of properties although It is more difficult to get smaller accomodation for 2 people, but still at very early stage of planning, so will keep investigating.

Back to thinking about a holiday to Arizona & wondering what is the cheapest way to do it? Rental, motels, camper van hire or any other suggestions?
So far my preliminary investigations suggest it's going to be expensive any way?!

San Marin at the Civic Center- This place features one bedroom and two bedroom rental accommodations. The rent goes to about $890 a month, which covers parking. My brother has been to this place. he says that the houses offer Ceiling fans, carpet/plank flooring, microwave, icemaker, decorative fireplace, shelves and other amenities. They also feature business centers.

Shadow Creek Apartments- Shadow Creek Apartments are much cheaper with rents about $499 to $586 a month. This place is located very close to the downtown Tempe and Arizona State University. One-bedroom houses in this place are equipped with d kitchens and walk-in closets. Swimming pools and barbeque area are provided for guests totally free.
