Hi everyone, i am worried about my many friends back in Tunisia and how the country will get back on its feet after this , as we all know Tunisia relies on its turisum for allot of its income, when i was over in October the amount of buildings going up was great to see but what will happen now , i know my friend is trying to get building permission and had to return from Italy when things kicked off because something was wrong with his paperwork ,his family are all ok and he say's things were getting back to normal .. without the turists money people wont have the money to build , i just hope flights are reinstated soon and we can get back to holidays in what i consider the best country to holiday in... I have been holidaying in Tunisia for about 6 years now and consider my friends in Tunisia as my second family.. i have never been to a country where people will go to great lengths to make sure you are happy and thats not just the hotels im talking about ,
My last trip was my best yet (and i mean best) we normaly stay in Skanes and get out and about using taxi's.... we get off the plane and go straight to the taxi's and like always have the usual haggle for a price 40 dina (i nearly died) your joking had it been that long ago since being here and paying 6!!! My good Mrs got a bit mad with me when i was like hell no chance.. so any way we get to the hotel (hasnt changed since last time we were here) but the Hotel Neptuna Beach has closed..lol it made me ill when we stayed there before so ha ... but it looks eerie the grass is long and the sand has blown over everything.. oooooo... we settled in , the rooms the same the staff are the same its so great to be back.... we had made arrangements with my friend and he wasnt getting back into the country untill a few days after we did which was going to give us some sun time before my friend met up with us.. the best thing about our hotel is that we know exactly what and where everything is we know what to expect the only problems we have are other turists... ( i dont understand people that go on holiday to africa !!!and expect egg and chips .. well you know what i mean.go to Blackpool!!!. ) the menu is varried , lots of salad , rices, pulses ,2 meat dishes , fish , pasta , PIZZA!! , CHIPS!!,for you know who!.. fresh fruit.. cakes to die for.. and loads more.. so we desided to go by bus to sousse in the morning as we have forgotten to bring swiming costume for our daughter.. doh.. so we get on the bus and go into sousse, its red hot , you need to go by bus its great fun,we go arround the madina and the market have a wonderfull day and head back to relax by the pool.. as we have a fish for a daughter.. day 2 we head into Monastir on the bus , i love this old town , then back to the hotel to have a swim and a few drinks... i phone my friend but there is something wrong with the signal.. i still think he is in Italy... we deside to spent day 3 on the beach.. so we go past the Neptuna beach with its crazy golf course with long grass growing all over it.. we have a nice morning at the beach, we go back to the hotel for lunch , i walk through the hotel and my friend is there waiting for me.. what a suprise i am nearly in tears with happeness , i didnt think he was due .. he had got early flights home so he could be here when we were, so we had a few drinks and made our arangements to go to saline , Kairouan then El jem .. so we were picked up by my friend and we headed off .. i was so suprised to see him driving i didnt know he had passed his test.. so off we go , the alarm bells were ringing before we got out the car park...lol... and if you have been to tunisia you will know what i mean... this was worse.. he had passed his test in Italy... 100 miles an hour .. we stop off in saline to shop a bit then head off to Kairouan to the mosque , we end up in a wonderfull museum house and have tea on the roof looking over the whole of Kairouan , then we head off to El Jem , this is where i want to go more than anywhere.. we have lunch just outside the main gates to the amphitheatre what a picture... this place was amazing ..amazing .. you realy have to go.. then it was off to Ksour Essef.. to my friends house.. and to his family.. my wonderfull family .. this family have taken us in to thier house and made us feel so welcome it is unreal.. my friends sister does henna tatoo's so my daughter and wife and our friend who is with us all get red henna hands it looks so cool.. before we know it we need to head home to the hotel... i realise that my friend has traveled from Italy just to makesure my holiday is complete... where else would you get this????.... before i know it the time is running out here and we are already looking forward to coming back.. i know i have rambled on a bit but i just wanted everyone to know that to enjoy Tunisia you need to be open minded and remember they do thing differently over there but to the best of there abilaties just go with the flow ... and yes my spelling is bad but hey...
have a look at Tunisia.com - yesterday hoteliers, hotel workers and tourists still there all marched in a peaceful protest through Sousse to say "tourists come back and to put pressure on the tour operators to demand a return to normality - so come on FCO lets all go back, have our holidays and let all these lovely people get back to work!
Somehow I get the impression you rather like Tunisia Cyd. Don't worry, quite a few of us on here feel the same. Tunisia will get through this time and the holiday-makers will be back. I recently saw a video of a big march through Sousse, noisy but peaceful, organised by the hotel owners and workers who were joined by some of the tourists still in the country . Now that Egypt has erupted Tunisia has gone off the radar of the TV companies but I keep up with the news through the web, and in particular the Support for Tunisia group on Facebook and I'll be back in March.
I'm only just starting to read the Tunisia forum to get an insight into the country and I have to say I really enjoyed your report Cyd. I hope the country will get back to normal soon and holidaymakers will return.
Shirley, Phil (hubby ) and myslef went to PEK for the October half term in 2009 and absolutely loved it , we stayed at the Marhaba Palace and it met all our needs food was fantastic, plenty to do , and the weather was great . We used to catch the little tractor train into Sousse and also the local bus , we were originally booked into the Royal Kenz but was notified that extensive alterations were going on and that some facilities might not be available and thats why we stayed at the Marhaba Palace also the Kenz is quite a walk from the marina , Tunisia is also another place on my want to return to list
Shirley. We were also staying in PEK and I would thoroughly recommend it for a first holiday in Tunisia. I would suggest that if you have enough time when you are there to try to do the Sahara trip. That was definately the highlight of our holiday. You see the real Tunisia and seeing the sun set on the Sahara is a sight I will never forget. You will fall in love with the country and it's people and no matter what you think about it, it casts a spell on you always making you want to go back there.
Yes i do.. i have done a few reports under my old login kiltedwarrior if you gave me enough money i would be out there in a flash , im just wondering if there is a opening for me to get over and help with the recovery...
Like digby, I would certainly recomment the Sahara tour. I've been out there a couple of times, first with Tunisian friends by car, when we spent a couple of nights in an hotel in Matmata and the second time I booked a proper tour independently through Saphir Voyages. Both trips were completely different but I wouldn't have missed either of them,
Thanks for the replies is high on my list of possibilities. I will keep reading the forum and taking notes
The lads in the hotel were lovely and great entertainers.
When the hotel was inundated at the weekend there were groups of young men who took over the dance floor with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other spoiling every ones enjoyment.
The security was called each night they were there and they sorted them out.
On the Sunday when they all departed everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
The FO have apparently lifted their advice against all but essential travel to Tunisia so hopefully the travel agents wll start taking bookings again soon.
That's great news Aslemma. Finances depending I'll definitely be going later this year.
It's getting stranger and stranger! Earlier I saw this on another site and checked the BA website, where all advice regarding Tunisia had disappeared. I then checked the FO site where again there was no advice. Since then the advice has been reinstated by both BA and the FO so we are apparently back to square one.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm have you been in at the cooking sherry Aslemma
Not a drop has passed my lips Graham, nor anything stronger than coffee, but if this situation continues much longer, together with the situation in Cairo where I also have friends, I may need something to calm my nerves.
I think both the tour operators and Foreign Office are waiting to see what happens in the whole North Africa region as there is continued unrest in several countries, all very uncertain times indeed.
I do hope it all settles quickly as both Tunisia and Egypt require tourists to return and help their recovery.
Fingers crossed for you Aslemma
I've got everything crossed Graham! It's very difficult to get any clear information at present as the news channels are focusing on Egypt and even the Support for Tunisia site on FB doesn't seem to have anything concrete. Unless things worsen radically I shall still stick to my plans - apart from anything else you must have run out of Tunisian coffee by now.
apart from anything else you must have run out of Tunisian coffee by now
yes this is very true
Your order has been received sir and will be processed as soon as your supplier can visit her stockist.
