Snow storms hit Greece
Ferry services and roads have been hit by snow storms in the Greek capital of Athens and in other parts of the country.
According to a BBC report, Greeks have been warned to make only vital journeys as the severe weather causes widespread traffic chaos.
Some drivers around Athens had to endure traffic jams of up to nine miles overnight.
The snow and gale force winds struck late yesterday, just at the end of a bank holiday weekend in the country.
There have been power cuts on a number of the islands, in Athens and in other parts of the mainland.
The ports of Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina are closed, but according to the Athens Airport website flights are currently operating as normal.
The cold weather is expected continue into tomorrow, with overnight temperatures in Athens due to dip just below zero.

There has been some snowfall in lower areas too today, but mostly just a few snowflakes & not settling. Central Athens is fine, the suburbs, particularly the western ones, that are closer to the mountains (Athens is in a basin surrounded by mountains) have a covering. Some more expected overnight, so maybe worse in the morning!
Today & tomorrow are the coldest temps in the 5 winters I've lived here, first time I've seen a minus figure on the weather map for our area!
It's the strong winds that are stopping the ferries & I can confirm they are very cold winds, feels like the UK!
I think I can safely say it will all be gone by August!
We have a view of snow, without having to experience it, for about 3-4 months on the Taygetos mountains,
Beautiful picture Athensfan- I'd never have guessed it was Greece.
i wont pack the ski's when i go in august then The picture is amazing athensfan.
Just to confirm that there is now a dusting of snow in central Athens this morning. Here is a photo taken by my friend when she got up & looked out the window, the amount is laughable compared to what some of you have had over the last few winters!
But im not into winter sports so i look forward to my visits this year in may to Cefalonia and October to Kos where i cant take up my usual pastimes for wandering around old villages and ruins, and sitting people watching with a glass or two of Mythos or Metaxa efta
