I'm off to Tunisia soon and had been trying to find a way to ride the Red Lizard train. However I'm reluctantly concluding that it's not going to happen this year since I'm staying in PEK, and the distances are large and getting to and organising an hotel for myself in that part of the country doesn't seem simple..
(however thanks to those folks on here who already tried to help)
I notice Thomson are now offering it as part of an excursion - but only from Djerba.
I still see that "ISANGO" are offering the train as part an excursion from Sousse, but the cost is about £125 and I've already visited most of the places on the excursion. However if I can find an office for them in PEK or Sousse I'll go talk to them.
My question now is though - I do like trains on holiday.
It seems that it should be possible to get on an express train in Sousse and go all the way up to Tunis just for a day out.
Has anyone ever done this? Is it a good journey up the coast by rail?

You won't see much coast as the train runs slightly more in land for most of the journey and should take about 2hrs.

You must certainly try and visit Sidi Bou Said as it is very pretty with some nice cafes to sit and rest after trudging up some fairly steep slopes!

I'm sure you'll have a good time. It's just under a month since I was there and hope to be back later in the year. I have no problems with the trains but the step up is very steep which can be a problem if you are 5'3" and have heavy luggage. 
Bear in mind that as well as the mainline trains there is a metro in Sousse - this station is just past the port.

I know about the Metro, I took it down to Monastir for a day last time I was in Tunisia.
Very pleasant journey and incredibly low cost. And I enjoyed wandering around Monastir.
Also have to comment - there was a small group of young Tunisian idiots on the train - sadly, every country has its share of them these days. They were generally being noisy, making a nuisance of themselves, and smoking and causing trouble, whenever the guard wasn't around.
A couple of older Tunisian people came up to me - complete strangers - and apologised for the behaviour of the young ones.
That doesn't happen in the UK!
