Oh dear this isn't the first time this has happen,in Istanbul in 2005 22 people died after drinking dodgy raki and the same again in alanya in 2009 a group of german students got alcoholic poisoning after drinking bootleg vodka in this resulted in fatalities due to brain damage from the chemicals that the vodka had been mixed with.
Very frightening indeed.
Yes, I remember the dodgy raki before. It really is very scary.
glad i stick to the water!
Glad I stick to Efes
Oh my God!!! I cant believe this!! I usually drink Vodka when Im in Turkey, although it does give horribe hangovers!!! Im a bit firghtened now! Was it the Vodka bought in bars etc or bought in shops?
You'll be fine in bars and resturants. Just be careful if you buy things on market. Goods are cheap for a reason, ie there are a lot of fakes.
Note that this story is from June 2011, it's not recent.

stick to the effes
very sad this is awful ....colleen
very frightening indeed.. vodka is my favourite tipple on holiday, especially like to sit out on the balcony of an evening having 1 or 2 while waiting for my daughters to get ready.. i would never buy alcohol from a market, so guess im safe there.. but what are the risks of it being served in bars/restaurants and boat trips?
We were in Turkey in September and I think the panic had died down,I doubt that the hotels and bars would knowingly sell potentially lethal drinks as it would soon become apparent where the bootleg vodka was.On boat trips I usually drink soft drinks or a very occasional beer,Efes is good,we never had any problems.I always take some duty free into the hotel so that I can sit on my balcony with a drink before we go out.
A firm in Huddersfield was prosecuted, twenty-odd years ago for adding anti-freeze to wine, that originally tasted like vinegar, to make it taste a bit sweeter. Anti-freeze = methanol.
Following this incident, checks were carried out on all bars and restaurants by the authorities. None of the ones I know would risk buying bootleg vodka - even more so after the incident early last year.
the same princible goes to cigarettes in turkey so many are fake not what they say on the packet. as for tobacco golden vaginia (haha) no chance at all of getting proper stuff in this country.

In resorts, I would agree but it's fine at the airport.
