Was chatting to a customer of mine regarding mobile phones and using them abroad.
Can anybody clarify this for me. Don't want to be hit with a mega bill when I return.
He said that if you have free wi-fi in hotel, you turn off 'mobile internet network' and search for wi-fi. Then anything you download (which is often only BBC & facebook - sad i know lol) goes through the free wi fi not your mobile.
Not very techy minded and get a little confused to say the very least.
Hope I've made myself clear in my question
Worth checking with your supplier I would have though. I have seen something mentioned about a "roaming Passport" but don't know what it means.

Think I will play it safe and ask 3 to turn off any internet access for the duration of my holiday.
I used the hotel WiFi on my android phone in Thailand. I just made extra sure that I had switched off data roaming.
I was told by someone at Virgin that it was the best thing to have them turn it off when abroad to avoid incurring charges. It does not effect the WiFi free.
That sounds the best option. Think I'll pop into a local 3 shop and ask them to do it for me.
thanks for all your replies
i use my wifi search on my phone abroad if the hotel has free wifi...im pay as u go on my nokia smart phone so avoid using it only use for the odd text and odd phone to home..however the internet cafe in fuengirola are that cheap I use them..
You don't need to ask your mobile supplier to turn off data roaming on a smart phone, you do it yourself. Just turn off data roaming before you leave the UK and don't turn it back on until you are back in the UK after your holiday. Also switch off your voicemail.
Im on pay as you go too! My phone turned data roaming and voice mail off automatically when we landed.
son turned mine off just as we were leaving...! Glad he called in!
Yep I agree with Gumbet, that is what I did in Mexico. Just turn off data roaming and I think I turned off 3G, just turned wifi on when I went to the lobby where the free wifi was.
Thanks again - will find out where I need to switch off
