I have used my phone abroad to check/send emails but always on an open WiFi network. I have been told I should not use the roaming feature as it is not free and can run up large bills. I remember reading in one of the papers of someone deciding to stream films whilst on holiday and being landed with a very expensive bill in excess of £600.
Worth checking with your supplier I would have though. I have seen something mentioned about a "roaming Passport" but don't know what it means.

Thanks for that link, still confused :rofl

Think I will play it safe and ask 3 to turn off any internet access for the duration of my holiday.

I used the hotel WiFi on my android phone in Thailand. I just made extra sure that I had switched off data roaming.

I was told by someone at Virgin that it was the best thing to have them turn it off when abroad to avoid incurring charges. It does not effect the WiFi free.

So I could ask 3 to turn off my mobile so I can't access it, but I could also use free wi-fi from the hotel and not be charged by 3??

That sounds the best option. Think I'll pop into a local 3 shop and ask them to do it for me.

thanks for all your replies :cheers

You don't need to ask your mobile supplier to turn off data roaming on a smart phone, you do it yourself. Just turn off data roaming before you leave the UK and don't turn it back on until you are back in the UK after your holiday. Also switch off your voicemail.

Yep I agree with Gumbet, that is what I did in Mexico. Just turn off data roaming and I think I turned off 3G, just turned wifi on when I went to the lobby where the free wifi was.

Thanks again - will find out where I need to switch off :cheers
