Before anyone goes to great lengths to help I have tracked down the Sanef website with all the info I require.

What are they?

I'ts a tag that you affix to your windscreen which enables you to drive through a special lane at the toll booths on the French motorways. It saves time as you don't have to stop to pay with either cash or credit card you usually just have to slow down as you get to the barrier and then when the barrier lifts drive straight through. The fees are deducted from the bank account that you have registered with the company.

Seems like a good deal. E6 per year for the device rental. E5 per month when the device is used to a max of E10! E20 deposit on the device which is returned when you send it back. VAT added.

So for about £25 (plus the deposit) in the first year I shall get to drive straight through the tolls (the delays at the telepeage are either non existant or very short and I have queued for an hour on a weekend to pay with cash). I shan't have to struggle to get over to the other side of the car when driving solo.

Plus the device is registered to you not the car so I can lend it to friends when they go over.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

And Useless for me as I ALWAYS have my caravan and you can't take a caravan through the telepeage lanes

unless you pay out for one for an HGV no thanks

Hi De HI the only real problems we encountered were around Lyon and Reims it does depend at what time you arrive at the tolls if it's lunch time you can expect a crush

Yes I know the tolls can be hit and miss. This year we arrive in France on a Wednesday and are planning to get close to our destination on Friday evening so that we only have a shortish drive on the Saturday to the Villa. However if our plans work out the Saturday at the other end of the fortnight will require a reasonable distance to be covered so saving 30 mins or so at each toll booth will pay off. Plus no need to carry a hoard of change/notes. And like I said I shall have at least two longish journeys as a solo driver and without a telepeage it would either mean being a contortionist at the booths or taking the N/D/C roads and weaving though towns.

I need to check whether it will work on the Viaduct de Millau.

Solo easy you need a kiddies fishing net combined with electric windows = no contortionism

We don't worry too much as we usually plan extra time into our route anyway we have stopped rushing so gone are the days we would do Calais into Montpellier in one day

We are planning to 'process' through France calling in on a few friends as we go on the way down and on the way back. As these friends live in different areas we are going to do quite a bit of criss crossing as we go.

I know the feeling when I drive solo to the UK in my LHD German car, I can almost hear the collective groans when I have to get out of the car to pay the toll at the Dartford Tunnel.

Driving round Reims is certainly easier since the motorway bypassing the city was finished, though like Gray we usually give our selves more time when driving to the UK since retiring.

Well since I posted earlier another invite has arrived to call in on some friends we haven't seen for years so yet another detour! Planning for this holiday is going to make El Alemain look like a walk in the park!
