Jerry what's the current story with the A22 tolls. Have the car hire companies got something worked out yet?

Well Judith I asked the girl who processed my car that question and she said pay for your tolls at the post office or local newsagent, and beware if you do that you are not paying for someone else's tolls such as the previous hirer. I said what do I do about the toll for the journey back to the airport she said use the 125. It occurs to me that you could actually know nothing about the tolls and return the car to the airport and pay nothing. It then occurred to me will the rental company take the toll from the credit card detail I left them with because they will be responsible for the payment because the car is registered to them. I asked that question and she said its nothing to do with them and they will not do that. The worst that could happen is that they pass on my address in the uk and they then attempt to collect the toll that way. I've been going to the Algarve for 30 years and they will not bother to try and collect the toll from you in the UK. I would be interested to hear from anyone on this forum who hasn't paid the toll and then been pursued to the UK. I can personally tell you that they do not bother with parking charges against a UK registered vehicle.
I still have over a week before I travel back to the UK and have not decided what I shall do.
I can say that the 22 is deserted.

Thanks for your reply Jerry. Hopefully something will sorted out eventually, though I'm not holding my breath.

Took my hire car back, they weren't the least bit interested in tolls. They "released" my credit card so the toll that I had incurred will not be paid by me through them. My advice don't buy any windscreen atachments just forget all about it. Lagos was fairly quiet although any restaurant worth its salt needed booking. Oh Yeah the weather was amazing.

I'm coming to the end of a another great holiday in
Lagos with a car hired from Goldcar via Carhire 3000. I got a VW Polo 1.2 diesel. Bearing in mind that you get a car with a full tank and I do drive around a bit, up the west coast, Algarve shopping, out to eat every night in it I'm going to find it pretty difficult to use all the fuel supplied so as to return it empty. However it will be pretty damn close to empty. There are 3 money making wheezes that I am going to avoid if I can next year. Firstly returning the car with an empty tank is nigh impossible unless you want to run the risk of running out of fuel. When you take the car you pay for the full tank of fuel supplied I was charged £75 for a full tank in the Polo. I defy anybody to get £75 worth of diesel at 1.50 euros a litre in to the tank. This was for 92 euros of fuel at an exchange rate that you have no choice but to agree to.
So it's the exchange rate.
An exorbitant charge for a full tank of fuel.
Returning the car empty.
If your only on holiday for a week you would do well to return the car with less than half a tank. Money in the rental company's pocket.
My advice is do the sums, a one off payment which may seem expensive may actually work out cheaper especially if you aren't going to use the car much.
