But obviously omitting the fact you are already abroad, as these policies are supposed to be taken out prior to travel from Great Britain.

Oh, and to answer the original question, no you cannot buy meaningful holiday/travel insurance in India. You will find posts on "so called" Expats forums that assure you that you can............... and once in Goa you will find people who will sell you them ..............

They are not worth the paper they are written on, and the sums payable would not provide for treatment in the dirtiest ward at Bambolim.
Either take out worthwhile insurance in GB or opt for pay as you go, as most long stayers do.

This is fraud of course, and there is quite a high risk of being caught.

In fact it should be cheaper as there is no outward flight to cover.

As no mention had been made of "medical" insurance until your post, I assumed the o/p required general holiday insurance including loss of money, passport, belongings,medical(of course), repatriation, etc etc.

I am 99% sure that this type of cover cannot be initiated once the insured party has already travelled abroad by admitting the fact.

What you describe is a sort of "taylor-made" policy ~(no outward trip, maybe insurance for return flight, etc) and this type of underwriting is not available on-line............ it's all "off-the-shelf" package stuff.

Maybe a call to a specialist broker in Great Britain would yield results, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

There would always be the suspicion that the potential insured had travelled abroad uninsured, met with some sort of mishap (medical or otherwise) and was attempting to obtain belated cover. The potential insurer would not be in a position to check the bonafides, and would thus be pretty daft to issue cover.......would you?

yes you are probably right.
When I said medical insurance I was meaning standard holiday insurance, I usually think of that as being primarily for medical issues.

Do you have no insurance at all- or only short term insurance? If you have none at all, you have risked a lot.
Best option is to google long stay insurance- there are quite a few options but you would need to contact them and ask if they can cover you now. Don't be tempted to lie and put in a fictious departure date as you will invalidate any future claim.

If you lie you will get caught out and might as well not have bothered with insurance in the first place like a lot of us long termers of a certain age have to do, medical problems while you are here are not a problem as the speed of response and care can be excellent also most hospitals are way cheaper than the excess you would have to pay but if you are taken ill on a flight or are fussy about having your body return to the UK, it could get very very expensive, so if you can find insurance go for it

Standard travel insurance must be bought before departure from the UK.
