I didn't quite know where to post this as it affects holidays in on both sides of the Atlantic, but there is an eclipse of the sun on November 3rd which will be either partial or total depending where you are on a line crossing the Atlantic from Dominican Republic to Central Africa. People holidaying in the Carribean, Canary Islands, Cape Verde will see a partial eclipse. To find out whch areas will see an eclipse and what percentage of the sun will be blotted out, use this interactive map,
http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/HSE_2013_GoogleMapFull.html
which will allow you to click anywhere along the line of the eclipse (and either side of it) to see what you might see. If you are on Holiday in any affected area, make provision to see it safely with eclipse glasses.
Thanks Frank
Well, it was well worth seeing. Nobody in Boa Vista seemed to know about it, the Thompson reps didn't know about it at the Welcome meeting either, I had to spread the word via them. My Heath Robinson rig, set up as a rehearsal the day before, to capture images of the eclipse generated enough curiosity to prepare some people. I hope others managed to see it.
It was a very small event in Cyprus - but friends of ours took safety precautions whilst viewing the solar eclipse at the beach:
