We have not fallen out of love with Corfu or with any Geek islands, have fallen out of love with the cost of Greek holidays due to the Euro.
When we last in Corfu and they were on the Drachma a beer was about 300 drachma and we were getting about 330 to the pound, last time in St.George South, one of our fav resorts a beer was about 3 euro,s and then instead of a half litre bottle of Mythos it was only 330ml :yikes
We still miss the charm of the Greek people, the fantastic food and the laidback atmosphere of the whole place but the costs have not done them any favours :cry

Regards
Alan

Hi Alan
I know what you mean. We haven't been since the drachma but have looked into costs several times.

Well, never having been there, I was never in love with it in the first place. I'm going in 2 weeks, with my son, DIL and grandchildren, they have been before and like it, this is my first time abroad with my extended family and it's to an all inclusive hotel, Mitsis Roda Beach, so drinks costs should not be a issue, apart from the fact that we've paid upfront. I've never been to Greece before, so this will be new, never having known what it used to cost it will be a clean slate for me.

I had to think about that one :rofl

Mossies are the reason I haven't been, lots of reports I have seen mention the little blighters and as they enjoy my wife, and she is very tasty to them and suffers for weeks after we decided it is better to stay away

Funnily enough I posted in another forum today that garlic capsules are the answer to avoiding mossie bites. Start taking them at least 2 weeks before you go and continue during your holiday. I used to get scores of bites and now if I am unlucky I might get the odd bite but that's it. They really do work. Just make sure you get the odourless ones :D

We went back to Corfu last September...........for the first time in 32 years!!
Had a nice relaxed holiday in St Georges South; plenty of good tavernas and bars altho' no longer cheap -more like English pub prices!!
Was quite quiet whilst we were there -late season and all that - several bars had not opened at all due to lack of business in 2013, but we found most of the places we used,to be welcoming/friendly.

Visited some of our "old" haunts -Benitses,Nissaki,Ipsos-on the East side of the island -didn't recognise them at all,so much building work has gone on over the 30+ year gap.

The airport was a disaster ,having to queue outside in the rain to get into Departures didn't make for a relaxing journey home.

Now looking for a September holiday back there this year -but the prices with Thomson seem to have climbed steeply since last year! :que

Your absolutely correct there Dave, that was the thing with the airport at Corfu, you were waiting outside either getting soaked or roasted by the sun, it was always a relief when you were eventually allowed in to the airport.

We have had some of our best holidays in Greece and stayed in Kassiopi which was really nice, Corfu Town is very pleasant and well worth a visit, you can even go watch them play cricket and hitting the ball of cars.

Sadly we haven't been to Greece for several years, the choice of locations for us is now very poor and it is only the large package operators that go from Scotland and they only take us to the large tourist resorts.

When XL collapsed and all the small specialised operators got bought over or ceased trading that must have had a huge knock on effect for some Greek resorts and islands.

Thomson seem to have crazy regional pricing policies which doesn't help to keep a decent range of destinations (deliberate perhaps???)
Last year, it saved us over £300 to drive to B'Ham and fly from there rather than fly from Cardiff (same destination apartments)-even allowing for car parking, night before hotel and the extra petrol we were still £200+ better off!
Am going to look for alternative prices but it now looks like we can't go until ~ 26th -may have to leave Corfu this year as the weather was breaking up a week before that last year - Zante or Rhodes seems possible.

I will never fall out of Love with Corfu. Have been going to San Stefanos for 14 years now and can't imagine ever going anywhere that is as friendly and safe as it is. Weather has always been great and the food is superb. Most people we see are the same people from the previous years and we all manage to have catchups as if we have never been away :)

Airport is a nightmare, much too small and disorganised, will not visit Corfu again until it is improved.

We have a day in Corfu as a part of our cruise. I shall have cash in my pocket and hopefully will be able to negotiate some bargains.

We decided not to do any of the excursions and walked around Corfu town. It was fairly obvious that they have no money. Rubbish bins look like they have not been emptied for weeks, possibly months, streets unswept, parks full of litter. However the Greeks themselves were very friendly and the prices in the shops were absolutely rock bottom with some really good deals on the fake designer things. I got 3 leather belts (Diesel and Hugo Boss lookalikes) for E3 each and mrs H got some fake Chanel sunglasses for E4
