We did the Golden Triangle a few years back. We combined it with Mumbai and Goa. It was probably the best holiday I have ever been on. We went with a local tour operator for the Golden Triangle part and we didn't go to luxurious hotels ( although we did stay in a Maharaja's palace in Jaipur!)
We did the tour in 5 days and it was hectic! You might look for a more leisurely tour.
