I was in Bilbao 2 years ago and I loved it, the traditional cobble paved streets, the food.. everything although there is a lot of poverty there too. People begging everywhere, I seen alot of drug use there too. There is an old town and a new town in Bilbao - I did go to the old town - and I did not feel comfortable at all - so definitely do not go there on your own. The cigarettes I have to say, I bought individually so I cant give you a price for 200 - and considering you are a smoker, you will love Bilbao cos' thats all they do. You are literally chewing on the camel spanish smoke. Anything else you want to ask, just let me know.
hi sistertwister- welcome to HT!
bilbao is the hidden gem of spain i have been going for several years now and love it. it is probably the safest city i have ever been to.
and the public transport is moderen and cheap the hotels are lovely.
the old town is partly residential but apart from the odd beggar is a safe place and a must see. culture vultures be in their element. as well as party animals.
the local version of tapas (called pinchos) are worth coming for alone.
