You certainly are planning ahead :D If you like red wine, try Omar al Khayamm (probably dodgy spelling). They had this in our hotel and we loved it. Tried a glass of white but didn't really like it.

The beer is surprisingly good as well. They have Stella lager which is nice and you probably get more than a pint from one bottle. The only other beer we tried was Sakara, also not bad. Prices vary from Hotel to Na'ama Bay LE150 to LE250 but worth it for the amount that you get compared to prices back home.

Bottoms up to you!!

The Egyptian white and rose wines are really not very good to taste. The red however. particularly the Omar Khayam is very acceptable. All the beers were great as long as they are cold

You are right Mrs P, Omar Khayyam is a perfectly drinkable red wine and when it's very hot weather I enjoy Rubis d'Egypt, a rose, served icy cold.

A lot of hotels serve Cru des Ptolemees as a white house wine, i'm afraid I can't stand it, but it might be ok as a spritzer.

Cheers! :glynis

We had quite a few bottles of red Obelisk which was very acceptable. The rose was not as nice however and we didn't try the white.

As for beers, all the Stella range was nice. Local, Export and Premium. Also tried the Sakarra/Sakarra Gold and a couple of places in Sharm served Meister.

All were very palatable, but I was quite happy to drink the Stella Local.

How much can you expect to pay for B & W in the hotels and how much in the town bars? In GB pounds please.

can you get white sparkling wine?

Hi Ozza, we are at the Badawia, which I know very little about!!! But as long as its clean and the sun is shining I will be happy!!

thanks to everyone for your help!!

Stella beer comes in two varieties, one the "local" and the other the "export". If I remember rightly, the local is in a brown bottle and the export in a green one. The export is somewhat stronger, and rather more expensive. (and, by the way, don't confuse it with the European "Stella Artois" - no connection and, indeed, no comparison!)

Egyptian Stella is a nice brew but not a patch on Sakarra Gold in my estimation!

Stella (Star beer) comes in THREE varieties

Local at 4.5%
Export at 5.2%
Premium at 6.2%

the local and export are 500ml bottles the Premium is 300ml

Apart from Omar Kyam the wine is AWEFUL and impoted wine is expensive Champagne cost £200 a bottle (yes English pounds)

the beer though varies from 12LE to 16LE for local to about 20LE from the expensives ones and Sakara is 4.5% and around 18 - 20LE a bottle

ALSO
Egyptian spirits are very cheap a BOTTLE of Vodka around 40LE

Mondays exchange rate was 11LE to the pound

If Egyption spirits are cheap, eg vodka 40LE a bottle, whats the average price of spirits to drink in the bars and resteraunts. I was led to believe they were quite expensive. Is it imported brands that are sold therefore making it dearer, or do you have a choice? My wife does enjoy her vodka and lemon on holiday but i thought i might have to pursude her to stick to beer, but maybe not!!!!

We were at the Hilton waterfalls
Bar prices were

Stella Local 16LE
Sakara 20LE

Imported
Whiskey/Vodka/Gin 40LE
Brandy/Malts/Bourbon 50LE

Egyptian (not on display)
Whiskey/Vodka/Gin 16LE

ALL bar sales got a 0.8LE Fiscal tax -sales tax is 10% all these are on top

so two drinks at 16LE worked out at 36LE instead of 32LE (40p English for taxes)

what kind of beer is sold in sharm hotels and bars, is it any good or is it better to go for brand names :glynis

When we were there a few weeks ago we found that it was all bottled beer, STELLA, or the local brew SAKARA (?), which was very nice.
The bottles are large ones and cost from £1.75 to £2.50 depending upon the bar in Na'ama Bay. We found that all spirits, including local ones were quite expensive. A Vodka+tonic was £4 in Hard Rock Cafe, but only £2.75 in the Camel Roof Top bar.
A lot of the "bars" in central Na'ama don't sell achohol, BUT you can sit all night with a 'Shisha Pipe' smoking your head off
Enjoy It!!!

They do have their own brand of beer, never tried it, but quite cheap, the name escapes me for the moment. Brand named beer is often more expensive at around 35LE for a small bottle of Stella.

Don't suppose it's possible to get a pint of the Black Stuff in Sharm is it??

Nothing better than a nice cold Guinness. :glynis

Had quite a few of their Stella brand. Not quite the version were used to, but drinkable all the same. :D

Stella - local gear, not bad.
Stella Premium - as above a bit stronger
Meister - local, a bit like Becks. :D
Meister Max - the much stronger version of the above - 8% (hic)
Sakara - easy drinking local beer - like Carling/Tennents

Dynan: Yes, you can get Guinness in Naama Bay - theres a wee Irish bar on the road into the main area, approaching the taxi rank...can't remember its name, its below pavement level.

An Irish bar in Sharm!! Blimy! They really do pop up everywhere!!!

It's probably as Irish as Jack Charlton but hey, at least I can have a nice pint of black velvet!!!

Cheers Mooby!
