I recommend my home town of Chester, loads to do and see but I think it is about 90 minutes from Lancaster

You could do worse than Northumbria; magnificent coastlines, some wonderful beaches - Bamburgh is splendid - but loads to see and do - Bamburgh Castle; Lindisfarne; The Farne Islands; Cragside House, ruins, old catsles, pretty market towns.

For a comfy place to stay try the Crown Inn at Warkworth - in the main part of ther town overlooking the castle (that's assuming they still do accommodation!)

Don't think you can go far wrong with Whitby. Lots to see and do some lovely hotels, though we've never stayed in any of them. The boat trips, food, markets, museum, park, shops and people are all great. There's also some really nice friendly little pubs up in the side streets this side of the bridge. Oh and not forgetting the abbey. We often go there just for the day and never tire of it, as there's always something to do and see.

Whitby is the best part of 3 hours drive from Lancaster, have you thought of the northern end of the Yorkshire Dales

What about Manchester. We went 2 weeks ago for the weekend and we're going again in Nov. Great nightlife, great shopping plenty if museums etc. Stayed in Hotel Rossetti -was £219 inc breakfast with £40 to spend in hotel -we had a meal there 1 night and it was super. Very handy location for everything.

Have you thought about North Wales? If you could stand a bit of self-catering, we stayed in a gorgeous little cottage on a farm, in a small hamlet called Llanfair, near Harlech.Cows opposite your living room window, and the odd sheep in your garden and on the patio! All mod cons, including a dishwasher. You need to contact Mrs. Thomas on http://www.Hengaeau-Farm.co.uk You won`t regret it, it`s lovely.

without a doubt York - not sure how far it is from you though - plenty to do during the day, ghost tours in the evening , plenty of resturants and Pubs, pubs, pubs.

Hi

Have just found out that you are in Manchester -

We're in Stoke --- helloooooooo

We've stayed at the St David's Hotel near Chester and that's really nice - its not far from Chester and as you know Chester is uperb for shopping, a really nice historical town and I'm sure there must be lots going on at night. You'll also be close to the Welsh coast (the hotel is on the main A55 route into the coastal areas). being in Manchester it wont be far to travel for you either - its straight down the motorway really!

It all depends what you can afford - but we had a great stay and the hotel was really nice.

The hotel is part of the DeVere group and on line they are expensive - we got a special offer for DBB and that was ok!

Just a thought
