I can`t claim to know a lot about Nidri, but we took a boat trip there from Kefalonia, and wished we could have stayed a bit longer. After we`d had a meal, there wasn`t much time left for hitting the shops, of which there seemed to be quite a few. I would advise a boat trip to Kefalonia, but hope you get more time there than we got in Nidri.
hi, i`ve been to nidri a couple of times and going bsck again this july, try direct greece most of hotels and apts beach front and not to expensive. we are staying at the palm trees hotel this year, no pool but you don`t need one as you step right on to the beach from the garden and all rooms sea view and what a view you get. lots to do in resort it`s not as quiet as made out but it`s ok.
Thanks wirehacker - I'm so undecided. Sometimes the net instead of making things easier makes them more difficult, so many different opinions. I'm also looking at Agios Nikitas on the west coast - the beaches that side are look to be absolutely beautiful. And it is much quieter. I'm torn - wanting to be in the thick of it and at the same time needing tranquility. In some ways to be on the outskirts of Nidri would perhaps be the best option but still with a seaview. Does the beach at Nidri get packed? I'm not planning to go till September. Who are you flying with? I'm thinking of flying to Athens with BA and then bussing it to Lefkada. Finding it very difficult to get direct flights to Preveza.
i usually go in july and it can get quite busy, i like the night life of nidri plenty of tavernas but it`s not all in your face. we fly with b.m.i but i think it`s chartered to direct. if you are flying to athens i would recomend agistri a small island off athens 30 mins on the cat it sounds just up your street been twice very greek just enough tavernas and couple of bars. we stayed in milos the old capital which is very very greek at the boulas hotel it`s not on the web though, it` a case of turning up and taking a chance but in september should be fine best time to go. trying nidri again just for a change of scenery. take a look at web sites for agistri you will be suprised
Something you must do when you go to Nidri is to hire out a boat for the day and take it across to Meganissi. You can get up close to Skorpios and also find your own deserted coves.
One thing to be wary of is that ,if you have accommodation on the main street, it can get very noisy due to mopeds that the kids use.
They were building a bypass last time we were in Nidri, so it might have made a slight difference now and taken some of the through traffic away.
Thanks for that. I'm looking at the Hotel George and have just emailed them to ask where is the hotel in relation to the main street. I haven't yet booked it so, we'll see. I was looking to actually stay on Meganisi but couldn't find anything for just 2 people - everything seemed to be geared towards villa accommodation. Also it would be hard to get back to Nidri for nightlife etc. I still like the look of Nidri because there seems to be alot to do.
i got back from nidri on sunday it is a lovey place and the weather was so nice, we stayed at the Yannis apartments right on the harbour, these were great and the staff were so friendly and you can book in when you get there. i would highly recommend the odessya boat trip which was excellent and the Ionian resturant which had great Greek food at cheap prices
already looking at booking again next year
We stayed on the beach front at the Yiannis hotel and apartments. It was a little dear but there are others with pools which appeared to have rooms when we were there. Excellent restaurants and small Greek bars are very good. Couldn't recommend it enough. The George is not that far from centre.
JeannetteB and Misspaws - how did you both get to Nidri? I am thinking of flights to Athens and then bussing it down. Wanted to get cheap flights through package tours but they're not flexible in terms of dates flying out. Any suggestions?

We stayed at Nefeli Apartments at Geni just around the bay opposite Nidri. 20 mins drive. 3 or 4 Superb tavernas in Geni and very tranquil!

We think Direct Greece are one of the best companies around. We stayed at the Nefeli apartments in Geni a few years ago, we had the top floor and the view across the bay to Nidri was simply stunning! The pool was lovely and it was so peaceful there, well apart from the magpies that danced and sang on our balcony every morning!!
Direct Greece have cut a lot of accommodation this year and Nefeli don't feature in their 2nd edition brochure which is a shame as if we ever go back to Lefkas we would like to stay there again! Heres hoping they haven't dropped them altogether!
We really rate Direct Greece too. Just got back from Stoupa with them (again!) and will be going to Nidri with them at the end of August, staying at the Theodore Apartments which look lovely, situated right on the beach. Never been to Lefkas before so really looking forward to it.
Hope the info is of benefit to the original request for details on Nidri from Woolly..

For those who have not been to Nidri yet try the 4 tavernas in Geni (Yeni) arond the bay directly opposite Nidri. 'Seaside Taverna' was superb. Take road south towards Vlycho, turn left at petrol station and just follow the road. You pass the tavernas on the left all situated by the water's edge. Road eventually ends before a pathway leading to a church at the end of the peninsular. Sandy beach at Dessimi can also be accessed from this area. Or hire a boat in Nidri and moor at choice of taverna.
We stayed in Vasiliki which was very peaceful, nice beach, easy to swim from. A little ferry which will take you over to Fiscardo in Kefalonia and Ithaka, and a beautiful harbour. I'd certainly recommend Vasiliki if you want somewhere a little quieter and less commercialised.
Thanks all. My problem with Direct Greece is that I'm not a big fan of the site style and secondly, it's quite expensive. I'm looking at a small budget. Also I did consider Vassiliki but was not enthralled by pebbly beach. So difficult to please. I know.
Hi woolly, direct are a bit expensive but the locations of their properties are excellent, usually seafront and not at the back of the resort. i`ve checked other sites and there`s not much in the price but position of properties better imo and worth that little bit extra for the sea views, no roads in front just the beach (hotel palm trees).
Dont worry about the beach in Vassiliki. Its only pebbly right at the back of the beach, the rest is sandy, and its sandy underfoot once you're in the sea as well. Beautiful place to stay!
