Me thinks you've got the wrong board, however we went to Kos a couple of years ago and hired a car for a few days. Didn't have any problems.
Hi Jaxster .. I have transferred this from the Costa del Sol forum for you, and removed the duplicate copy.
Kos town is ok, plenty of places to park on the roadsides but its a lovely place to walk around to be honest, some of the places we found while lost, ahem sorry, wandering around were wonderul archealogical sites, and would ahve been a shame to miss them
We were in Kos last September and hired a car. We hired it through our travel agent and it was a great car. We had a problem leaving the airport on the first night with the car. My brother in law hit the side of the road and burst a tyre. It cost us 80 euros to get it fixed as it wasn't covered by insurance. Hiring a car was great as we got to see most of the island. After a few hours driving it is fine if a bit busy.
Driving on Kos is fine you should not have a problem, however, be aware of the parking restrictions within Kos Town itself - there are places where parking is restricted to say 1/2 hour or even no parking at all, the signs are obviously different to what we are accustomed to - If I recall correctly they have blue signs which mean there is no parking between certain times. best checking with a local or using a proper carpark, there is a parking area down near the dock.
We found car hire very cheap in Kos last October and had no problems at all driving round the island. We found the best place to park in Kos town was the free car parks near the archeological sites. Heading into Kos Town (from Kefalos, etc), you will start to see the ruins, look out for a couple of free car parks near a small ampitheatre. From there it's a short walk into the centre of town.
Was out in Kos last october,
had no problems driving, signs tend to be on top of junctions thou,
hired a car for a day to tour the island, and went over the mountain from zia to kardermena, was kinda exciting!!!
enjoy your driving, you should enjoy it!
I hopefully will hire a car when im out in Kos
jeppo
Kos is a bit of a one (main) road island so you shouldn't get lost.
The main things to look out for are (1) the other tourist on quad bikes/ push bikes (of which there are many) and (2) other local two wheeled vehicles which seem to operate an unwritten rule that both under or over taking to pass you is OK. Just make sure you check both mirrors before you turn ! On the main road there is a type of 'cycle lane' that most bikes tend to stick to.
If some one is flashing you on the opposite side of the carriage way he is only letting you know that he is overtaking some one (in his opinion going too slow) on his side and that you should give him more room (if you can !).
Petrol stations are many on the outskirts of Kos town (just follow the main road out) and petrol is possibly a fraction cheaper than here, many take credit cards.
Parking in Kos Town is easy and (as far as I'm aware) free if you go to the main ferry terminal near the castle - which then gives you a pleasant 3 minute walk into town.
A car is really handy for getting around especially to the beaches and other tourist places such as the pretty mountain village of Zia, the archelogical sites and to the supermarkets (again on the main road just outside of Kos Town) for cheap beer and souvenirs.
Cheaper to book the car before you go - website prices vary alot so do shop around and be prepared to see if any will price match your best quote. We paid £98 for 1 week for a Clio in mid Oct.
I would definitely recommend hiring a car on Kos (and I am not the most confident of drivers) - it made a real difference to our holiday.
