Heres one for the group
On Holiday we had an accident in the apartment where a glass panel was broken. It was accidental, it also turned out that the panel involved was not safety glass as it would have been in the UK. We assumed the liability insurance would cover it. (Accidental Damage).
The owner of the apartment demanded monies to replace panel.
We informed the owner that we were insured and that we would claim from insurance. We also informed that we were unable to negotiate or pay directly, as this would void our policy.
The owner of the apartment threatened police and also threatened the non return of Passport and registration document The latter would be needed to leave Bulgaria
Catch 22 or a warning.
I leave this to your knowledge base
any help appreciated

I would suggest you ring Ros Fernihough on 01922 621114 for free advice regarding this matter. She is a Travel Law lawyer and will be able to advise you of the legal standing.
We accidently broke a window on holiday in Florida in 2003. Never thought that it would be covered under our insurance so we coughed up $150 for our damage. Don't think I would have bothered claiming under my insurance because of the excess and the hassle involved.
It wasnt the money. The Glass panel was defective and the whole apartment was falling to pieces before our eyes. Also I am glad that my daughter was not a toddler. Its the principal of being held to ransom. he knew about our insurance and just wanted the money (250 Leva) In Bulgaria the registration document is needed to exit the country. When we paid him we voided our insurances. But thats just the tip of the iceberg. We couldnt advise him of the other things that were broken.
