Hi,
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that's posted their comments about DIY/Tailor made holidays so far. It has really helped contribute some fantastic pointers to my research. If anyone else has any other comments, i'm still doing my research for the next three weeks so every opinion would be gratefully received.
Thanks once again,
Bridgy
we have done package and diy. We now do diy because we are a family of five so its expensive we have just come back from mallorca and it costs us aout £700 we are going back in a week and its the same price that is with car hire if we did a package its about £2000 i wouldnt able to afford this and we wouldnt get away also its nice to just jump in a car and enjoy the view on the way to the accomodation you dont always no what its going to be like but thats the fun of it plus for what price ive paid i would just make the best of it.
It usually costs half as much as a package holiday.
You can tailor the dates to suit youself.
There are lots of other reasons but the above are the important ones.

1_ I am tired of poor travel agent service after they have sold the holiday usually for as much as they can wring out from your wallet, after setting them a limit
2-The satisfaction of booking a flight at a bargain price
3-The pleasure of picking a hotel ,this may take hours, only having oneself to blame if the hotel is poor.
4- No reps selling you overpriced tours that one can organise oneself, then ignoring one complaints
5 More than anything else the savings made if one researches properly,as prices for the same hotel from different companies can vary by up to
100%, for a scot this is important
cheers maxie
You should always bear in mind though tha if you have booked inependently, should anything happen, for example, your flight operator goes bust, or the company you have booked your hotel though goes bust, you could be left stranded, thats the security you have from booking through a tour operator.
Until recently, I always maintained that tour operators gave excellent value for money, but now that I've tried d.i.y. holidays, I am amazed at the savings to be made- enough to pay for another couple of holidays per year. Good luck with your degree.
Tailor made (i.e DIY) is often better for us as we means we can travel on the day we want to and work around my hubby's shifts.
I am booking DIY for a three center holiday for two weeks next June in the Far East.
I decided to do it myself as the agents seem a bit of a rip off, only quoting you for 3 or 5 days then you pay for "additional nights" plus by booking through an agent you miss out on great local info and hotels they might not offer.

HI CAROLINE ,IF the airline goes bust one has insurance thats what it is for.I have world wide cover free from the bank . ,I am sorry but I prefer to pay less and take a risk ,If easy jet, ryan air ,globespan, monarch , thomson hols, go belly up I will eat my words . They have to start filling seats and filling horrible flight times there is always one available somewhere ,I can buy it. Easyjet andRyan air are scheduled flight times . Why pay line a Operators/Agents pockets with money when you can keep it in your own cheers MAXIE

cant see a problem here,as stated insurance will prob cover it, and hey say the airline goes bust when youre abroad just buy a ticket on another one! thats what credit cards are for.as for hotels i generally pay the hotel when i arrive/depart.
Hey maxie and martin, i love a bargain, i book both DIY and direct wth the companies all depending on price. I was just advising what the possible consequences could be shoul you not have adequate insurance! i guess i should have stated that!
