My bank account is with the HSBC and I rang them yesterday to see how much they charge and it is £1.75 per transaction. Quite expensive i though.
Does anyone know if u get charged commission to cash your Euro cheques, because the post office is commission free if you buy euro travellers cheques, but i dont know if you get charged to cash your cheques into euros in Majorca.
I rang my HSBC branch today and they told me they don't charge for ATM use abroad.
Well that goes to show what a good bank it is.
http://www.moneyexpert.com/current_accounts/compare-bank-HSBC-current-accounts.htm
shows
Card transactions abroad Cirrus/Maestro transactions abroad - 1.50% (min 1.75%) Maestro transactions (point of sale) - 2.75% exchange rate adjustment
Incidentally, Yorkshire Bank looks even worse
http://www.moneyexpert.com/current_accounts/schemes.asp?Provider=Yorkshire%20Bank&affiliateID=1
ATM Transactions abroad - 3.50% of the transaction, min £1.50. Purchase Transactions abroad - 2.00% of the transaction value, min £1.50, max £9.00.
But then I checked the net and found this page - shows
Card transactions abroad Cirrus/Maestro transactions abroad - 1.50% (min 1.75%) Maestro transactions (point of sale) - 2.75% exchange rate adjustment

Your link may highlight the differing HSBC responses.
The details of your link suggests that it may, and I stress may, depend on what type of HSBC account you have.
A bog standard HSBC account gets the charge but this charge is not listed for the 'Plus' account (which you pay a monthly fee) or the Premier account.
Many Thanks
The rate was 1.42 euro on friday in Santa Ponsa. In the two weeks we spent there the most we got was 1.43.Plenty of places to cash cheques. You might get a slightly higher rate with cheques.Have a great holiday.
On the subject of banks and charging, I took the chance and used my card over there 3 times, the card was on a standard HSBC current account
I took out :-
£175 and was charged £2.63
£280 and was charged £4.20
£210 and was charged £3.16
The exchange rate was comparable at 1.425 and 1.422, the latter being the day when 1.40 was offered in resort.
has anyone got any info on where the best place place is to cash sterling travellers cheques commision free and at a good exchange rate in playa de muro thankyou
bekki
Where is the best place to change money in Magaluf. We are staying at Sol Magaluf Park.I know we can change money there but from experience I know u don't get a good rate in hotels. Can anyone recommend a good exchange where they don't rip you off near to us.
If you walk ariound the resort, you will always from places to change your money for no commission, we where in Majorcar in August, and the rate was 1.43 E, so look around.
We are frequent travellers but even we got ripped off on holiday 2 years ago.unfortunately the sign that said u had to cash £1000 to get the rate was so small neither of us could read it from where we stood.we only got 1.35 but the person behind the counter just pulled the shutter down when we started to complain. There was nothing on the board outside just a small plaque on the wall behind the counter
There are loads of places you can change money but if you are cautious ask your rep, use a bank or your hotel as many offer an exchange sevice. Happy holidays!!
does anyone know where the best exchange rates are in palma, hotels or banks and if you know what the current rate is, also if anyone knows the same for illetes. we are going in 4 weeks and dont know whether to change money here or there. thanks
Can anyone tell me what exchange rate you are getting out there. I got 1.36 Euro to £1 in Thomas Cook the other day as I only changed up £100. MIsread the sign where it said 1.43 to the £ which was if changing £600 or more. I have cash but wondering whether to bring sterling, use my Nationwide Card or convert some more Euros - any advice please?
Currently 1.43 (and no commission) for any amount of cash at Exchange next to Woody's Bar in Magaluf.
