Hi noelphobic

We went to SB with my mother and father 3 years ago and my mum is a diabetic and she found it very hard to even find glusgose sweets we even ended up in Bourgas trying to find some
In a shop we met a girl from England who spoke very good Bulgarian and she tried to help us but could not so we went again last year and took sweets with us but the problem occured that my son sliced his foot open and we had to pay the excess on our insurance bill.

We were listening to a radio station last week and they say that if you get all receipts you can even claim your excess back through your E111 from as even though they are mostly private clinics the health board will cover you to a certain amount. It would be worth a try.

Good luck to have your son home.

I'm not worried about the insurance as it's nothing to do with me. His dad took the insurance out and he can sort it out. It will only be an issue next time my son takes a policy out, he will have to mention it. I have to say that I am not impressed by what I have heard about the medical treatment, a chest x ray and an ultrasound scan were so obviously not needed. I sent my son with glucose tablets but any sweet food or drink would do for a mild hypo. Glucose tablets or Lucozade are best but coke or normal sweets would work. Even sugar lumps.

My husband has problems with his eyesight and we learnt that always to remember to tell the insurance company everything.

yes, you're absolutely right. His diabetes has always been covered when we have been away. However, the next time he takes out a policy he will have to tell them that he made a claim and the circumstances etc.

All we can say is good wishes for him coming home and enjoy as you cannot alyaws be there with him.
WE learnt this as my mother fell 4 years ago and fractured her skull and it was touch and go wheather we ever got her home and it was me the youngest of 5 who got the call from my dad and had to tell the rest.
This was in Rhodes and they flew her to Athens and there was no nursing care if you wanted it you had to pay for it and my oldest brother and sister flew out to nurse her for 3 weeks
So Bulgaria is not all bad.

It sounds as though it was very stressful for all of you. However, I would love to have been able to fly out and look after him myself and would have been on a plane like a shot. However, I only found out last night and he is flying home tomorrow so our planes would probably cross. As for Bulgaria not being all bad - well what can I say! They gave him unnecessary tests, reduced his medication by too much and kept him in longer than necessary.
