Youre probably gone already but another difference is that there are only showers in the pyramid rooms - no room for baths as you go up the flights! We stayed there last June didnt find a strange smell and were only a few floors up so thought wed hear the casino but didnt. We must have been lucky!Great hotel though.

Just wondered if anyone has stayed at the Luxor recently. We stayed there 5 ears ago and at the tiime the rooms in the Tower were nicer than the ones in the "pyramid". Just wondered if that is still the case? We would like to have a nice view as the last time we were on the ground floor and as far as I can remember we did not have much of a view. Can anyone recommend which room or floor we should request? Any info/tips would be great. Cheers, Maryjo

Hi Kneeby,

We stayed in the Luxor a couple of years ago, and had a great time. As you said it is at the south end of the strip, but it is an easy walk to the rest of the area, and there is also the monorail between various other hotels. We stayed in one of the pyramid rooms which were great, although I believe the tower rooms have more space. We had a great meal in the then new chinese restaurant, as well as the buffet breakfast in the hotel, and we also tried out various other restaurants in town.
As always it boils down to personal preferences, we loved the Luxor while others I'm sure haven't liked it, I would definately go back to the hotel. I'm sure if you book it for your honeymoon, you'll have a great time as well. :D

We stayed at the Luxor nearly 10 years ago and we loved it. But now I've seen some comments on 'TripAdvisor' saying that the rooms were a bit scruffy and dated. We want to go back in September 2008. Should we try somewhere different.

And can you settle a domestic argument ? I say we hang on and book nearer the time. My husband says we book as soon as we've booked the flights. What would you do ? And I'm going to book direct with the hotel whenever we book.

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks

The Luxor is currently undergoing major refurbishment. MGM who took over the property are aiming to move it upmarket. They have started with all the bar areas, some of which are completed and look very classy. They have recently opened the LAX nightclub as part of their plan to attract a hip crowd. Much of the Egyptian theme is going, the buffet and bars now have non egyptian names, Much of the mezzanine is going to be changed with a lot of the family friendly attractions removed. The renovations are in three phases with the bedrooms being done last. I havent been in a bedroom recently but the casino itself, apart from the new bar areas, is certainly showing its age. If you are booking direct with the hotel then the best prices will be nearer your date of travel.

You can book your hotel at anytime
If you book it now you only pay for the first night....then if you find a cheaper deal nearer the time you can cancel your original booking and re-book at the better rate.

Click Here for our review from June. The holidaymaker certainly seemed not to have a problem.

If anyone has stayed here since recently then please add your review via the above link. Thanks.

I would echo tangobunny. Book now, and secure your price. Check back on the hotel website regularly, if the price has fallen you can cancel and re-book - if it has risen, then you're saving money!

(just what we did, and we're hanging on to our original booking as the price is over $200 higher now ( even using a promo code!)

Definitely agree with Tangobunny and Sancho. Book now at a rate you're happy with. You will only pay for the first night's accommodation up front and can get it refunded if you cancel before 48-72 hours before arrival. Check their cancellation policy.

Then keep checking their site and also Fat Wallet for promos and offers. Sometimes the promos on FW are for player's card members only, but not all. Page 1 is updated regularly. There are often offers for MGM from $69/night.

If you do see a lower rate, no need to cancel and rebook, just call the hotel and they will adjust the rate for you.

Thank you so much everybody - I appreciate your advice. It'll be a shame if they remove the egyptian theme - that's what the hotel is all about. We're going to chance it and book the room and then keep an eye on the rates.

I would check the rates at least weekly as they can go up and down in Vegas. You can call and get the rates adjusted as many times as you like.
What rate are you getting at the moment?

Thanks for the advice Luci HTMod - not actually booked it yet, as there doesn't appear to be any rooms available yet for September 2008 - unless there's a huge convention planned for then and they're all booked up already - they can't be, surely ?

I would think it's because it's too far ahead to book. I tried to book for November in January and was told they didn't have their room allocation then. I think I finally got it booked in either March or April so that's 7-8 months ahead.

However you may be able to book if you call the hotel direct. If you are calling the US, put 0844 861 2121 before the 001 and it will only cost 1p/min.

Are you definitely going for the Luxor? There are several hotels centre strip in the same price range such as Planet Hollywood (formerly the Aladdin), Bally's, Flamingo, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, Mirage or Harrah's.

Keep an eye on Fat Wallet and you will get an idea of the offers that are available. Last year we stayed at the Venetian for $119 and Caesars Palace for $120.

Thanks again Luci - the reasons we wanted the Luxor is because there's four of us going, (2 couples) and a couple of years ago we had a brilliant holiday on a Nile Cruise, so we thought it'd be a good idea to re-create the holiday. The other couple haven't been to Las Vegas and I thought the Luxor would knock their hats off - but all the hotels are so larger than life, any one of the ones you have mentioned would be good. And thanks for the phone number - I'll let you know how I go on. t.t.f.n.

Ten years ago we stayed at the Luxor and we thought it was brilliant.
We've talked about it ever since and now we are planning to go back with some friends in 2008. But I'm hearing mixed reviews. A friend has just been and he says it was shabby, tired, the rooms were dark and they weren't impressed at all. In fact they weren't impressed with Las Vegas either. So what does everybody think? Is it just memory lending enchantment. L.V. really did really thrill me ten years ago, but perhaps it's different now. And they say you should never try to recapture a brilliant holiday. Should we try a different hotel? Perhaps not stay four days as planned?
Has anybody been to the Luxor actually this year ? I'm going to be dead embarrassed if we take these friends and it's all a bit old hat, after me going on and on about it.

We didn't stay in the Luxor but we did visit last week and had a good look around amidst the gambling.

I stayed there in 2002 and to be honest not a lot has changed. The main public areas look very similar, although I can't vouch for the rooms or pool area.

It was certainly a great experience in 2002 and everybody should experience the Pyramid rooms at some time in their life. It has started getting more indifferent reviews on various forums so it might be worth trying somewhere different? We have now been 4 times and stayed in the Luxor, NYNY, Excalibur and MGM Grand. For me the MGM is by far the best LV hotel we have stayed in, absolutely magnificent.

As for Vegas itself? Well at the moment there is a huge amount of construction going on which won't be complete for a while yet. This is putting some people off but in a city that is expanding as rapidly as LV you have to expect this. People have also stated that they found the sleaze monsters that hand out porn flyers to be more prevalent this year but I thought completely the opposite. Certainly on our first visit in 2002 they were far more in your face, especially around the Boardwalk area of the strip which is now a building site.

We have been 4 times in 5 years and we are still finding new things to do. I don't expect a return for a few years yet but this is purely down to having other places to visit.

Vegas is Vegas, it's a love or hate thing I think. It is pure escapism with a chance of winning big. We love it, but can also appreciate and respect why some people don't.
