Does anyone have any info on trains around Nice? We plan to use the train to tour around the towns on the Riviera, as have been advised that car parking is a nightmare & this should prove to be a better option.
Has anyone done this or do you have any advice.
(i'd quite like to hire a car for a couple of days to explore the inland towns & countryside)
And I'm going to sneak in another question about the scenic 'Train des Pignes' and the other one that goes into Italy, as I didn't get any replies on that topic before, just in case this post catches someone's eye!
We have previously used the bus to travel from St. Raphael to St. Tropez but again there's a train service.
I would be happy to use the train out of Nice both eastwards and westwards but would try to pick less busy times to travel and avoid market day over the Italian border.
Car driving can be frought. Done it a couple of times and have to say the driving skills are suspect. Most cars are dented and parking can be difficult. The coastal strip between Nice and Frejus is very busy but if you head inland the roads are less congested. Public transport (bus) to places such as Grass, Vence, Eze is good but I don't think there's any main railway routes. Mougins might be worth a drive to (10-15 miles north of Cannes) but I'd avoid the car in Cannes itself. Villefranche, just eastwards of Nice is walkable from the old Town part of Nice in about 2 hours...perfect for working up an appetite for a meal in one of the many fish restaurants at the old harbour. Watch for Mondays though, some close that day and lunchtime serving often ceases by 14:30.
Port Grimaud is unusual; be careful though as the train may pass through Grimaud and it's about 4-5 miles inland of Port Grimaud.
Been to Nice many times and know a little about the town. PM me if you have specific questions.
Cheers, Mike
Do you think the transport will be less busy at Hallowe'en when we are travelling? Have you visited at this time?
We visited the South of France once before in the height of summer and the traffic was a nightmare...bumper-to-bumper logjam. I'm hoping for a better experience this time and to really see the place properly!
We stayed in Frejus and visited quite a few of the places you mentioned
( except the inland towns). Hope to see some of them again in a less hassled mood!
http://www.db.de, DON'T buy anyone tubs of chrysanthemums as presents..... they're for decorating the graves of the dear departed!
Hi! Unfortunately the period you've chosen coincides with the halfterm holidays in France (from 22 October) and the public holiday on 1 November (Toussaint - or All Saints Day). Trains do run on Bank Holidays but on a reduced timetable so do check before you go. I'd still suggest using the German railways timetable service to plan ahead -Don't want to be too organised. Would prefer to wait until we get there & then decide what & where to go.
Point taken re chrysanths....Maybe I'll get lucky & someone will buy me flowers!
