Hi there :wave real holiday maker, me thinks that Sliema2 has a problem with the phrase " you either love it or hate it ", malta that is.
To extend this topic I would say that it may be a true saying as I know a few peeps that hated Malta and would never return but I think that could be said for many holiday resorts. Some people 'love' Benidorm and go every year, I think that I would 'hate' it and would never consider it at all.
It all depends what you want from a holiday.
Oops, I hope Sliema2 doesn't go all emotional on me now :yikes :argue :tut :no

Unfortuatley Malta lovers cannot accept other peoples dislike, everybody I know always discribes Malta as loving or hateing my own grandson who went there on a uninvericity course living with the Maltese people absolutaly loved it which I can accept as being very educational but for my husband and myself we witneness apart from a dirty hotel some very disturbing thing like being invited on to a locals boat to suck a certain part of their anatomy apart from from a very dirty hotel, ok the nightclubs are not the hotels fault and the sex going on below is also not the fault of the hotel but contacting food poisioniong and having being taken to hospital after being taken ill in in a cafe in Valletta, sorry it's not for me we love Greece Kefalonia is our favourite but if other people do not accect this it is thier opininiol which I thought this site was all about

Hi pojo

the issue Sliema2, myself and many others have with the "you love it or hate it" is that no-one loves all of it, and no-one hates all of it (not even you - there must have been something you liked ??)

Hi charliegirl007 long time no here from you, well the way I see it is this.
My cousin went to Bugibba once (yes he did that once but liked it) and told me it is like a war zone, well last new year I also went to Bugibba for a week and said to Mrs holidaymaker never again, not Malta but Bugibba it is like a war zone, pot holes, building going up and down all over the place and then there are the time share herberts why would I want to go back with all the hassel, and there was the time in the Park Hotel 4* Sliema rubbish food and 50 Russian kids running about all night keeping people awake and the management not doing a thing to stop it.
These are just two things that have happened to us on holiday in Malta, and why did they build Bugibba there why not at Mellieha Bay or Golden Bay super beach's not rock would have been much better but thats the way it is.
So you could say if you really wanted that I hate Bugibba and the Park Hotel, but what of Malta as a hole well I would not have gone there 4 times and plan to have more holidays here soon, what I like is the history of the place for a small island can there be any where better, every town has a story from way back when, walk through the gate way of Valletta and step back 400 years or M-dina a 1000 years or the temples 3500 years this is what it is all about.
If you want sun,sea and kiss my quick hats then go to Spain or Greece and see what you get as for hotels look them up before you book, use sites like these, ask friends and pay as much as you can afford but even then you never know for certain ( as some one once said, life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get) did I see that in a film?
This is just what I think but I never know what anything is about. :?

Hi Mark, yes you are spot on there mate, that saying is a really poimtless and meaningless thing to say that has become one of the more ridiculous urban myths regarding travel, I think only people with limited intellect can think in such a cut and dried way about anything, I am sure that you agree that normal rational balanced people experience all kinds of emotions not just love or hate.

Charliegirl, I am ok now, it's amazing how a couple of handfulls of valium or prozac washed down with cognac lifts the spirits  , you are of couse right in what you said, realistically one can attach this pointless saying to anywhere or thing in the whole wide world, so it therefore can't be exclusive to Malta.

Dave, you have obviously experienced many different things in Malta, from the bad, the good, the indifferent (there's afilm title here somewhere copyright Sliema2) and by your comments with regards to the history the amazing and we agree with you fully on the history mate, surely this is what travel is all about, life as we all know is not a constant bowl of cherries, things do go wrong no matter where one is in the world, but different things are what makes travel so enjoyable, experiencing other peoples cultures etc, no one has to love it, accept it or even hate it, but to experience it is the main thing.

Pojo, glad you like Greece, so do we it's fantastic and can't wait to return one day, out of interest which of the Greek islands have you been to ??.

To summarise, no one should really get upset about genuine opinions good or bad, but when those opinions are based on nothing more than hearsay, speculation and urban myth, then whats the point in making them in the first place, usefull travel information is about fact not fiction ?.

Regards to you all
Sliema2

Ps, Mark we should hopefully fingers crossed be in Ghawdex a week today, so who knows if we get time to pop in to Gleneagles then we may bump in to you :glynis

You do need to know which resorts are good and which are to be avoided.
St.George's Park & La Vallette are nasty horrible places, but the Vivaldi is right across the road from them and is lovely.
Ones I personally would avoid are the Alexander Palace and the two mentioned above.
Sliema or Bugibba/Qawra/St.Paul's Bay offer a much better choice of 3 and 4 star hotels.
