Steady Mark, I seem to remember our good friend Mr Zahra taking you to task over something similar.

Hi Sliema2

hopefully the liberal use of "allegedly" will keep Mr Z happy:D

Bye the way Mark, been meaning to tell you, I got chatting to a bloke the other week in the pub on Stalybridge Station, he lives in Xlendi, little scouse bloke with grey hair looks like a cross between Ian Lavender and Mervyn Day, offered me his last tin of Cisk he did but Mrs Sliema2 advised me against accepting drinks off strangers, do you know him ?.

don't think so, but sounds like someone likely to bump into !! as it happens, just about to take the dog for a walk at Xlendi, down by the tower - I'll look out for someone with that vivid description !

You may well bump in to him some time, he looked and sounded like the sort of chap who likes a bit of a booze up :glynis , you might see him in Gleneagles if it's open that is, still not happy about that, will return very soon and drink em dry.

I think I know which football ground Backpacker means - the ducks gave me a clue.

Exactly below the word "aerial" there is a dirt football ground, just across the little bridge to Manoel Island on the Sliema to Valletta coast road. The small huts for the ducks are directly beneath the "v" in the word "view."
I think this might be the home of Gzira United F.C.

Of course :bhead , ingliza has solved it, I never spend much time on Manoel Island, we went to feed the ducks one day and were intimidated by a large hungry looking beige dog, grazzi ingliza :bow .

That's amazing ingliza-

If I remember rightly there was a donation box on the fence - for money to house/feed the ducks
I didn't realise that was such a large island - never went further than the football pitch

Cheers Mark for the link earlier

In Valletta I remember trying to find a bar that would show the England v Italy game on telly- everyone kept directing me to the Tottenham Hotspurs Supporters Club, but could never find it. Kept on finding 'Ollie's Last Pub' - didn't realise the significance of the place until I ordered a drink and started looking at the pictures on the wall- Couldn't believe that someone was so crass as to name a pub just because that was where Oliver Reed died - didn't stay there long - is that pub still going?
Saw the game in St Julians

I am not a football fan myself, but my son recently managed to buy an old programme - Man Utd vs. Hibernians F.C (Malta) September 20th 1967

I had a quick look through and noticed a section about the profiles of the Hibernian players of the time. Apparently in 1962 Atletico Madrid offered £10,000 for the Maltese goalie Alfred Mizzi.
:bow Wonder how much that would be worth today?

If any of you are interested in this type of Maltese football nostalgia, I have scanned the entire programme to a PDF file, PM me your e-mail address and I will send it to you.
