I see gozomark is browsing and he seems to know a lot - so shall ask him - if he doesn't mind?!
Hello Mr Gozomark,
I will be travelling to St Pauls Bay this Saturday and am a bit confused as to the amount of Maltese Lira I can bring in - one says LM50 (Malta Direct pocket guide), others say LM1000 and LM5000. I anticipate exchanging before I go, £600, so I am assuming that this amount, when converted, will not require declaring? - Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated. (I cannot get hold of the tourist board over here as constantly engaged). Many Thanks.
Cathy
There is a limit on the amount of cash that you bring in with you. Do not worry about £600, you well below the limit you would need to add abut another two zero's at the end of that and I doubt you will exceed the limit.
Hope the info helps.
Just in case you ask yes I am a Maltese resident
Hi Cathy, if you wanted to take LM6000 in to Malta then you could deposit it in my Bank Of Valletta account (Preluna Towers Branch in Sliema) and I will spend it for you, sorry meant to say look after it for you until you return next time .
If you are an EU citizen, I'm not sure if there is a limit any more - certainly, the LM50 limit has gone - it used to be about controlling flows of LM, now its about EU laws on money laundering - I doubt if you tried to declare it that the customs officers (if even on duty for a flight from within the EU) would care even if you told them !
OK, did a bit of searching - http://www.visitmalta.com/en/practical_infos/index.html
and click on currency/credit cards/banks
it says
"Exchange controls have been removed but any person entering or leaving Malta carrying cash or other monetary instruments, the value of which is equal to or in excess of LM5000 or equivalent will be obliged to fill in the appropriate declaration form available from Customs."
thats from the official tourist board website

Many, many thanks to you all for your very, very kind assistance. Greatly appreciated. My first time to Malta and I'll make sure to raise a glass or three to you when I'm there. Cathy
Hi Cathy, also meant to mention that there is no shortage of ATM'S all over Malta, especially BOV and HSBC, hope this helps.
