Having returned from a long overdue 2nd visit to Madrid I thought of a quick report.
The city looks fine in the sunshine and a quick orientation tour on the open top buses is a must. 13 euros for the 3 lines and they do take you all over the city.
The Gran Via district is where we stayed. This is a very busy area however within 10 minutes walking of all the shopping streets and numerous tapas bars (some are soooooo good).....and buzzing night life. Madrid, like many cities in Spain really only starts to come to life about 10pm, however I thought the people friendly and in general a mixed crowd frequenting the bars etc which makes a nice change from say the UK. Lots of nice things to see.....really good shopping and drinking and eating. Well worth it for a couple of days.
We stayed at the TRYP Gran Via hotel which is wonderfully located. Its dated, and the rooms are not all that big. Also it can be a noisey i should think if you are not planning to be out for a good bit of night. Not a hotel for those wanting to be in bed by 10pm. By the way the buffet breakfast is really good....plenty of choice.
Taxi from airport around 40 euros to this area.....go by tube - although does involve change(s) one...yes 1 Euro!!

I am moving this to the City Breaks forum as it would be very helpful there. I will leave a "shadow" on the OD forum so that it can accessed.
Hi Nivsy .... you will find our Madrid topic here, if you would like to copy your report for the benefit of those browsing that topic:
