For between £400-£500, you should get a nice place with a sea view in Sliema. Standards vary so you'll need to see a few places first. Book into a cheap hotel for 2-3 nights and go to the real estate agents (or email them first to get the details before viewing) along the Sliema sea front. You'll be near the St Julians/Paceville area which has many bars, clubs and restaurants and since you're 21 that's the place to be. However, it might be relatively quiet since its the low season and some places will close at that time of year.

4. Whats crime rate like in malta? especially the cities?

Compared to any UK area, crime doesn't really exist. Very safe walking out at night in generally every area. Sure some things do happen but not really on the radar screen compared to the UK, even small towns in the UK.

5. Whats Malta like in general?

Well, it's not like a Greek or Spanish island which most people tend to think before they visit. It is it's own country and doesn't live off a rich mainland like other islands in the Med. It's a busy place with a large population of locals. It's very built up in certain areas because it tends to have all the infrastructure (government, ports etc) of any other country but in a small space. Has loads of history going back 000's of years and isn't a sterile place with all in resorts like Spanish or Greek islands.

By a good book such as the Rough guide or LonelyPlanet to get background before you go.

6. How much can one live off?

Don't try to penny pinch as you get what you pay for in Malta. Eating out, about £19 including a bottle of nice local wine at a good restaurant. You can pay quite a bit more in certain restaurants (5* hotel restaurants etc). You can also eat for less at alot of the cafes. good pizza normally around £4-5, good pasta for the same price. Tea and coffe around £1-£1.50. Pint of local good beer £1.60- £2

Of course with an apartment you'll buy a fair bit at the supermarket.
