You need to take a trip and explore the areas before looking at properties - you could get too chanelled.

I'm not sure what you mean by "too North African" - the Moorish influence has played a large part in making Andalucia as interesting as it is.

South Almeria has Roquettas as its main resort - semi high rise - well liked by tourists who simply want a resort but might not be the ideal place to live.
North Almeria has the main resort of Mojacar - low rise and spread out along the playa with the old pueblo a couple of km inland on a hill- doesn't suit everyone as a holiday destination but an interesting place. There is quite a bit of building going on to the north of Mojacar at Garrucha and Vera. Inland is interesting and attractive with very little "plasticulture" about.

Between Mojacar and the city of Almeria you will find the Cabo de Gato where there is some very attractive coastline - a bit exclusive perhaps.

The costa calida also has some good beaches but tends to be less attractive inland.
The area around the Mar Menor is different again - needs a visit.

I am however biassed towards Mojacar and the area inland from there.
