... there is an Ice Hotel in Lanio, not far from the ski resort, that is really really cool? I ask this as it was completely deserted when we went, they don't seem to advertise and no-one else mentions it. A must visit if you are in the area. They also rent cabins. http://www.snowvillage.fi

PS, No I don't work for the guys that run it but I was expeptionally impressed with the service and feel that my partner and I should at least share the experience.

I posted a write up but not sure if people would respond about it.

Hiya

I'm not sure how to get there from Levi i'm afraid. Coz we were staying in Yllasjarvi and then were staying in Ice hotel, we got a taxi booked coz we had so much luggage. I did see a bus arrive with tourists though but don't know where it came from. Maybe you could try emailing the hotel and asking them. There must be a bus of sorts at least to Yllas anyway.

Sorry not been much help!

We are thinking of booking with Esprit and going to the Hotel Rielkonlinna in Skarskalia next Xmas - has anyone been with them - they seem quite reasonably priced considering it is expensive anyway !! :D

Hi
I have also been looking and Lapland for Xmas 2006 and have booked with Inghams. I found this the cheapest. We have 3 children and for 7 days with santa visits, reindeer rides etc plus skiing and all gear it was still cheaper than anything else I could find. All the 'Santa Specialists' seemed to go up to 5 days and were extortionate.

Gook Luck

After much research I have booked Christmas 2006 in Levi Chalets with Inghams for 7 nights. We arrive on Xmas eve and have a few questions. Is everything closed on Xmas Day? What trips would you recommend? Who did you book with? Your tour operator or levi.fi? As this will probably be our only visit to Lapland due to cost, we have 3 children, I would like to make the most of the time there. So advanced planning would help. I know this is early but I am so excited i cannot stop thinking about it. Any replies appreciated.
Many thanks

I did 4 nights at the Yllas Saaga in Dec 05. We went with First Choice too. very nice. highly recommended. we paid less than £1800 for 2 adults and one child, which is good value, but there are the extras to consider - over £500 for all three to do reindeer sledge, Husky driving, snowmobile safari, but all excellent experiences, esp the huskies. Skiing is very good value. £83 for a 90 min approx lesson for the 3 of us, this include all the equipment.
lovely food esp if you like fish. and the meeting Santa experince was very nicely done. Not the cheapest of holidays admittedly, but we had a lovley time. this sort of trip is also good if you have never been skiing and aren't sure if you'd like it (I don't but my sister and my daughter were naturals on the slope!)

Hi -

I have been to lapland ( Saariselka ) with Emagine for the last 3 years. It is that good that a once in a life time trip has turned into an annual event !!

I could say so much about the trips but in summary.

emagine are not the cheapest but their attention to detail is excellent - no detail is left unplanned. An example of this is that when my son gets to meet santa he says " hello charlie, i can't believe you are back again ". charlie is amazed that he is remembered.

when you arrive at your hotel and the kids have a cuddly toy waiting in the room ( nice touch ) and the presents santa gives out on the last night are quality presents ( charlie is 8 and got a bionicle set - whic e loved )

The staff are second to none - they really want to be there and keep the kids entertained all of the time.

I go on the 4 day trip and this is long enough ( quite a tiring trip with all of the activities.

Happy to answer any other questions

Hi!
In regard to your question about how your children will be in the cold - we went to Levi last December with our children who were only 3 years and 15 months old and they were fine, our eldest only complained once when temperatures dropped to -23. We bought all our own gear for them, if you are considering buying any of your own clothes for your children, the following sites might be of use to you -

Hi Oasis Mark. You may well have already gone ahead and booked your trip to Yllas by now, but I only just found your posting (sorry!) I'm sure you'll have a great time in Yllas. In my humble opinion however, the package "deals" you find on offer from the big tour operators are a bit pricey. The Snow Princess is a very clean and comfortable hotel in my opinion, and whilst not worthy of any more, is certainly worthy of the Three Stars it has been graded at. Incidentally (sorry to be an anorak) but the name "Snow Princess" is one that has actually been invented by the tour operators in the UK. The hotel is actually called the "Yllaskaltio". So don't get confused when you arrive... it IS the same hotel!

There are actually quite a few decent hotels in Akaslompolo (which is the name of the village, it's the resort that's called Yllas). If you haven't yet booked your accommodation, here are the other hotels; Sirkantahti, Kittila, Hullu Poro, Jeris, Pallas, Olos, Yllashumina, Akashotelli, Yllasrinne and Yllas Saaga (which I see has already been mentioned to you).

Obviously the resort of Levi is far more commericalised than Yllas, and if you want to have something different to do every day of your stay, then Levi would be the better option. However going off what you've already said, I suspect you will be far happier at Yllas.

There are several alternatives to the package deal option, and it depends on how many of the pre-arranged/organised events etc. you want to be a part of. Putting things into perspective price-wise, it would be far less expensive to make your own package up. For example, a return flight from Manchester to Helsinki in winter is as little as UKP97.00 inc. surcharges and taxes with SAS (Scandanavian Airlines). Then you can get an internal flight up from Helsinki to Kittila with Blue 1 (Scandanavian Airlines internal flight arm) for around UKP100.00 return. As you may be aware, the package deals with Thomas Cook et al, all fly into Helsinki anyway, so you have to make that connection either way. You can literally pay anything for accommodation in Yllat from UKP24.00 to UKP450.00 per person per night for an en-suite twin or double room.

So as you can see, as far as flight and accommodation costs are concerned, you could do a four night stay in Yllas from as little as UKP300.00 per adult. Of course that doesn't include any ski hire, clothing, skidoo safaris etc etc. But I find the beauty of putting your own itinery together, is that you don't feel obliged to do X, Y or Z simply because you've already paid for them. Similarly if you find you really enjoy one particular thing more than others, then you can do that as many times as you want to (or can afford to) throughout your stay.

Either way, I'm sure you'll really enjoy Yllas and the surrounding area, and as I say the "Snow Princess" is a perfectly acceptable hotel. At the end of the day, it's like most things SHOULD be in life, i.e. you can reasonably expect what you pay for. One thing that frustrates me more than any other on these opinion sites, are people who book into a Two Star hotel... and then moan because they didn't get a Four Star experience. I'm sure other visitors to this site would be interested in hearing your opinions when you return. Have a great time... and congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

Hi Jakecella

We're planning to go to Lapland in Dec 2006. We've had a look on the internet and prices vary quite a bit.

If you don't mind me asking who did you go with and what was the cost? We're also 2 adults and 2 kids.

If anyone else could recommend some tour operates for Lapland I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Try eclipsedirect a sister company to First Choice.
We went with First Choice actually right over the Xmas period.
Stayed in Rovaneimi in Hotel Santa Claus. 2 adults 2 children £2300.
Money well spent.
Best holiday we have ever done too!
at the time did not know about Eclipse but now use them all the time as we find the First Choice group excellent.
Good luck

Hi, the resort we went to was Saariselka which is in Finnish lapland, it is about a 3 hour flight from London.

The Hotel was the 'Hotel Holiday Club Saariselka' and the tour operator was ESPIRIT whose reps were excellent to be honest.

Have a good'un.

Hi, I would like to book a trip to Lapland this Xmas, 2 adults, 3 children ages 12, 7 and 5 probably for 3 nights. Have looked at lots of different websites and read lots of reviews. Have found one trip staying at the Tunturi Hotel in Saariselka has anyone stayed there would you recommend it. I am guessing 3 nights would be a good time to stay as a day trip not long enough and 4-5 nights might feel too long. Any advice on trips and accommodation for a family of 5 would be very helpful. Thanks
