Travelling in March with two daughters. Firstly, how hot can we expect it to be and secondly, do we need to be "covered up" when visitng sites, e.g. long sleeves etc.? Any advice on this subject, even if just example packing lists for a week(!!!) much appreciated.
Thanks,
Meg
For travelling to Cairo Luxor, historical sights etc, if you are not a skirt wearer, then jeans, trousers, combats, cropped trousers are fine. Bear in mind that cairo is cooler than Sharm!!!!!!
T shirts that cover your shoulders are recommended. 3/4 sleeve tops are great. I would avoid midriff tops or low cut... you will get stared at.. as you are perceived as an easy target for buying souvenirs etc.
trainers or covered toe shoes are recommended as the sand is gritty and gets into sandals. Sunglasses help avoid eye contact.
Put it this way, if you went to a palace here, or a stately home, would you go in beachwear in the summer, in the UK.. Probably not.
You will enjoy it... just stay relaxed
Thanks for the tips. I'm getting on a bit these days so don't really care what I wear! lol - having probs convincing my 17 yr old that maybe a bit of cover is required.
Please cover up in Cairo... trip buses are a natural target anyway for sales.... and it is cooler to wear comething loose... you will get better bargains if there are no midfriffs on show.... I promise!!!!!
A woman on our bus in Cairo paid £15 sterling for a carved cat that should have been 20 egyptian pounds!!!!! (£2) They bumped the price up because she was in strappy top shorts and wedges.!!!!
I know beacuse I was wearing a 3/4 sleeve top and combats and flat shoes.. I'm terrible at haggling... but they didn't inflate the price!
Whilst staying at the Conrad last year we walked down the Baron hotel shops and out onto the road.I had a beach dress on with a full top(not like a vest) and it was just above my knee.It was only about 50 yards back to our hotel but there were some workmen waiting for a bus and I could hear them shouting something aimed towards me.I couldnt get back to the hotel quick enough!.After that unpleasant experience I wore a Kaftan top and long trousers when I visited Naama bay.
I know that this question has been asked previously but there is conflicting answers. My wife is concerned about what to wear both in the days, walking about town and visiting the sights and in the evenings eating out and looking for somewhere for a drink etc. She wants to know if t'shirts and shorts are ok for the day (Do arms have to be covered or are 'strappy' tops ok) and perhaps sleevless dresses (if temperature is warm enough) for the evening- we go on March 6th.
Personally I can't see what's wrong with Jeans and jumper for day and nights!!
Thanks all.
ive been to luxor twice & cairo & had no probs in luxor with a strappy top & cropped trousers. didnt see many women walking around luxor in v short shorts or teeny minis but i think thats prob due to the ages of most of the fellow tourists around. i never felt uncomfortable - most men tended to give you admiring glances but not over the top but as i was with my husband this probably put them off from being too interested. as we were visiting the mosque in cairo whilst there for the day i had the same sort of gear on & took a light jacket to cover my shoulders. i have heard from friends that maybe wearing shorts/short skirt in the big souk(market in cairo) is not a good idea as you may get touched/groped!!!
the only place i have found overtly leery men ( & i mean leery - as in walking 2 steps in front of me & my husband & staring at my chest!!! saying hello hello) was in aswan my gawd i thought my other half was going to get involved in a scrap he was getting v p***d off with it!!! and there i always wore a shirt/light jacket over my strappy top when i left whatever resteraunt/bar we were in there so its not as if my ahem assets were on display!!! ( & i had cropped trews on as well)
around your pool in the hotel anything EXCEPT topless which is illegal goes but ive heard that many visitors in the red sea ignore this & do actually go topless.
dont worry you wont have to resort to bringing a demis roussos number to feel comfortable.
enjoy
another question, just wondering, i know that egypt is a muslim country but i do also understand that sharm is fast becoming a tourist type brit resort... so do you see girls/women wearing denim mini skirts and such like? i understand you will mayb get attention from egyptian men, but i was looking at pics of pacha and the bus stop and saw lots of young women wearing short dresses and skirts, so it it accpetable and would you look out of place with other HOLIDAY MAKERS?
thanks again

This year we found that the locals in Sharm were less "in your face" than last year
They appreciate a pretty woman and the man will get offered camels as a jest
on the beach at the hotel it now seems anyhting goes -- especially with the Russians the number of Thong topless women was amazing compared to last year -- and some of them shouldn't wear thongs
In town light clothes giving a relatively good skin cover seem to work well but strappy tops appear to be ignored
Wore a vest and below the knee skirt in Cairo and the looks I got meant I felt like I was walking around topless! When we were going around the market, all these men kept telling my husband he was very lucky (obviously he is!). It was horrible and I was glad to get back on the bus.
