[b]There is no problem all Hotels and Restaurants allow smoking or have a smoking area. The airport has two small smoking rooms.

did hear last year of a woman who was charged with smoking in street ,theres a topic some where on here.was fined and got a nice certificate ,i smoke and had no problems but you know what the police are like

as far as I was told last year, smoking in public is illegal, even on the beach, but not enforced. I think I saw some signs somewhere saying that smoking is not allowed.
I have no idea if this is true or not, I smoked in public wherever I felt like it and nobody complained or remarked.
In fact the only comment I had was from waiters who wanted to try my ciggie rolling machine.

Dont be bothered about the No Smoking signs around. No one will trouble you at all. At the most "if" you meet a greedy cop, he might ask you for a 100 rupees. I am a smoker so take it from me when i say i have never been fined !!

I returned from Candolim two weeks ago. I was not aware of any ban and smoked on the beach, in the hotel, in bars at markets in fact everywhere with no problem

You can get "arrested", which means taken to a little wooden hut next to the road and have to pay a fine. The fine wasn't very big though and you get a nice certificate, and it really is quite nice, to say you've been fined. I think the perceived wisdom is once you've been fined then the certificate allows you to smoke for the rest of the day.

This happened in Nov 04 if I remember rightly. I'll ask those who were with us because I can;t remember if it was one of our lot or a woman we met in a bar that got caught. I'm pretty sure it was in Calangute just down the Baga Road a few hundred yards.

I also smoke and take absolutley no notice of the smoking ban. In fact I get a shave every morning at the barbers by the T junction in Candolim (the one closer to the Prazeres by two shops) and every morning have a fag chatting and watching the world go by with a couple of Goan policemen who have never mentioned it to me at all. Neither have they ever mentioned the moped I hire, whcih is also supposedly illegal

I think this, like many other laws in Goa, are really tools to give the police some power when they really need it. Basically, as long as you are not disturbing anyone or being anti-social in any other way, you can do more or less what ever you want.
