Hi Biiltrac ... I'm sorry to see that you have not had any response here in the Disabled Person Holidays forum. I'm not sure why, but could it perhaps be that some haemodialysis patients may not regard themselves as disabled persons, and therefore might find no reason to look in this particular forum ?

If that is perhaps the case, then our General Holiday Enquiries forum may be more appropriate and so I will transfer the topic there now in the hope of a better response.

However, if you use the Search facility at the top of the page using keywords 'haemodialysis' or 'dialysis', I think you may be able to pick up some previous discussion from our individual resort forums.

I believe that some cruise ships carry the required equipment for dialysis on board, so that treatment can be continued as requested. Try Costa Cruises, and happy holidays to you and your good lady wife.

For those with health concerns there are 3 excellent hospitals in Torrevieja, the newest and biggest of which is the San Jaime, completed this year. No waiting lists here! Spain has two-and-a-half times as many doctors per head as the UK and the difference shows. Patient care is among the highest in Europe

Forgive me if I`m wrong, but is dialysis classed as an emergency, and therefore you can be treated under the EHIC card. ?
The new hospital in Torrevieja has state of the art new technology and equipment, so the facilities are there to treat your wife, and this may be more reassuring, not sure how you go on with it being a private hospital and payment, sorry

David, yes I guess that although Dialysis patients may not class themselves as disabled they can be treated as such, so I thought that was the correct forum to post. Happy to be proved wrong.

no dialysis is not treated as an emergency as it is an ongoing condition. We have looked at several options for Europe. Most countries do a recipricol agreement whereby Europeans can get treatment in any other European country(funnily enough Australia has a similar agreement with Britain - we are thinking of going there 2007).

It just seems that wherever we look at holidaying the local hospital is a private unit which means we need to pay. Not a great problem just bumps the hoiday cost up

Take a look at Malta a friend of mine had Blood Transfusions there.The hospital he attened arrange it all for him.

There are state hospitals in the torreveija area, I know there is one in villajoyosa
I think the department of health or your local renal centre should be able to help ...try this website, click on holidays, it gives some very good advice, the more you go in to it.

There is a brand new public hospital near Torrevieja
The Vega Baja Hospital is in Orihuela in the district of San Bartolome. As such it has several names, Vega Baja, Orihuela Hospital or San Bartolome Hospital. This is the nearest public hospital to Torrevieja

There is also a new public hospital due for completion this summer in Torrevieja, that will have the facilities for dialysis. 14 units I believe, according to the link below.

Sorry, when I said is it classed as an emergency, I know it is an on going illness, but it will become an emergency if not treated.?
