We are possibly going to one of the Greek Islands this summer - however my husband is on prescribed painkillers - tylex that contains codeine and also codeine on its on - someone said that codeine is illegal and not allowed in greece - does anyone know if this is true?????
Thanks
I'd have to check - but I've always believed that it is illegal in Greece.
I have checked on a few sites for info about codeine as a friend who we go with also takes a prescribed painkiller which contains codeine. It seems to be that it is ok if you also take along a doctors letter saying that it is a prescribed medication ,a copy of your prescription , and you keep your tablets in their original packaging. If you stick to this there should be no problem
I also take painkillers containing codiene and had heard this about Greece and also the Dominican, but I can assure you taking these into Greece is fine. Most contain only 30mgs anyway.I dont know if you would not be allowed to take full strengh Codiene (500mgs) into Greece but I dont think these are still available. If you have them in the original packets its fine.No one has ever stopped me to check what is in my bag and I must admit sometimes the contents resemble a chemist shop!.
Wouldn't risk it, if it is banned - which it is, then you could well be in trouble if they find it on you. I would check with the Greek Embassy in London and find out whether it would be okay if you did have a letter from you GP with you.
Hi, Im a nurse and I would disagree with the previous writer who suggests not risking it. If you have been prescribed co-codamol (Tylex) then there is a reason for it and you should take it with you, However, you should certainly enquire and be sure to take any relevant documentation with you too. If it really isnt acceptable to take the painkiller into the country I would advise booking a different holiday.....if you need pain killers you need pain killers. There is also the possibility of our GP prescribing you different pain killers to take with you for the time that you are on holiday, maybe see if you can try some out before you go to find one that is suitable.
Debbie, just go to Greece with your husband with his tablets and a current prescription.I have been to Greece and the Dominican where codiene is also supposed to be banned and no one has ever stopped me and searched my bag.I put all my medication in a cosmetic bag and all the potions available from Boots that I may need in my toilet bag.It is the old fashioned codiene tablets that were available over the counter years ago that they will confiscate not Co-codamol,Solpadiene,Tylex etc which only contain 30mgms of codiene.
