am considering visiting this island in Malaysia. Any suggestions as to where on the island is best to go? We like a few bars & restauirants in the evening but not too much heavy/loud nightlife.

loud/heavy nightlife in Langkawi...not much chance of that.
The area around the Pelangi Beach resort..Pantai Cenang has number of hotels restaurants and bars...about the livliest resort area we found in Langkawi...even then it was hardly rocking.
Some hotels are often very remote without even a local restaurant nearby so its worth choosing your hotel with care.
