Never stayed there but went for day last September from Molyvos, had a very good meal and the beach was beautiful. There seemed to be loads of other good restaurants looking out on to the beach. Going to Molyvos for 5th time this Sept.

Hi Chinks
We loved Lesbos went there a couple of years ago stayed in Petra but visited scala eressos, no worries, its a lovely place the seafront is fringed with tavernas and bars some of them built on wooden stilts making for a very picturesque setting.
The only tip i can give you is to hire a car whilst there its a big island and there is a lot to see. its not as touristy as some Greek islands we have been to and that makes it all the more pleasant in my opinion. You`ll love it.

We didn't stay in Scala Erossos when we there last year, but visited it for the day and it was lovely. We wished we had stayed there! It has a very relaxed feel, slightly hippyish and rather alternative - lots of workshops going on, like yoga on the beach, or tai chi. I seem to remember it was quite 'arty' too.
There are lots of good restaurants bordering the beach and as one of the other replies mentioned, some built on stilts with verandahs and very attractive. All were busy and buzzy! There seems to be a resident population of Europeans too.
It was a little more touristy than many of the other places in Lesvos, but not exactly Costa Brava! No where is in Lesvos!
The beach is pebbly but the water is clean, clear and warm - what more could you want? The island also has several thermal baths - what a wonderful experience! Worth visiting the Petrified Forest, but very off the beaten track so you would definitely need a car.
We'd both go again so thoroughly recommend it....... we're hoping to go to Egypt this year though, so it will have to wait.
You'll have a fantastic time.

Visited about five years ago. As previous respondees have mentioned Great Beach fronted with wooden restaurants, some tourist shops playing on the poet Sappho theme. It was quiet then, may be more popular now...

I stayed on a farm in Petra, loved Molyvos, drove all over the Island which seemed to have good roads by Greek Standards, There was good water sports at Skala Kalioni - The petrified forest is worth a visit, I remember there being desterted beaches on the south west coast, and warm water for a swim ...

Dear Chinks,
Have to agree with all the other posts. Went to Molyvos last year and had a fantastic holiday. No beach at Molyvos to speak of, but Petra and Anaxos are local, a short taxi ride away. Get a car and explore the Island, the best beach we found was at Vitari deep in the south. We visited Scala Erressos when we had the car. Pebble beach, clear waters, Taverna's and bars on stilts on the beach front and had a hippy feel to it. It was quite busy however when compared to other parts of the Island. I think that wherever you go you will have a wonderful, traditionally greek and relaxing holiday.
The other good thing is that it is CHEAP when compared to other Islands. Have just come back from Skiathos and found it 50% MORE EXPENSIVE than Lesbos.

Have just returned from Lesvos. Had a brilliant time, the weather was warm but not too hot as it was the end of the season. Stayed in Skala Kalloni - nice long beach, but beware of sea grass - had to buy plastic sandals as I didn't like wading through the grass and not knowing what I might step on. Food was wonderful, in 14 nights we did not have 1 bad meal, everywhere else I have been in Greece I have had at last 1 bad meal per holiday. We went to Skala Erressos - would we go again - absolutely note - the beach was filthy, covered in cigarette buts and rubbish - we were extremely disappointed.

Would we go to Lesvos again - yes we would, it is peaceful, quiet and the people were incredibly friendly plus the Ouzo is the best I've had yet - might be because they make it on the island!

We visited Lesvos for the first time in July this year and liked it a lot. Not too touristy even in the main resorts. The roads were generally quite and good by Greek standards, we stayed in Eftalou which is very rural but handy for Molyvos. The tavernas on this island are among the best we have found in 25 years of Greek travel. Yes Greek beaches are usually covered in fag butts, its a real shame but smokers do'nt seem to consider it as litter or maybe they just do'nt care

Skala Erresou is not very Greek.
What I mean is that it has been more or less taken over by non-Greek 'incomers'. Went there some time ago but it certainly made me feel uncomfortable and I suspect it is worse now.
