Yes Varna is cheaper than Sunny Beach for shopping but thats because Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are purpose-built resorts, no-one actually lives there and all the shops are geared to tourists. The nearest city to Sunny Beach is Bourgas and thats where you will be able to buy things at a price more for the Bulgarians.
Varna is an interesting city to visit not just for shopping, it has the sea-gardens,museums architecture and roman baths as well as the shopping.
Hope this helps.

Plenty of shops etc. here a lot cheaper than Sunny Beach, and, it also has a large Metro( MAKRO ) superstore on the outskirts.

We stayed in Obzor (half way between Varna and Bourgas) last August and visited Varna by bus several times.
The journey only took one hour but the problem was that the last bus back towards Bourgas was at 5pm !!
Get off the bus in the city centre, by the Cathederal is a good spot, as the bus carries on to the main station, about a mile away.
On your return, get the local bus back to the main station. (2 lv)
It was pouring with rain one day and we asked a yellow cab driver what the fair would be just to the main station from the Cathederal.
He asked for 40 lv !! We used the local bus.

Hi, you were caught on the Bus, it has just gone up from 50 stotkinki to 60 stotkinki anywhere within five miles of Cathedral. When in Varna if you are not happy with price, just tell the driver you will ask the next Cab. It can make a big difference. Cheers Tonyt

We will be in BG again in June, we are thinking of hireing a lada from rentomobile.com for 22euros a day.
We can then please ourselves when and where to go, and stay in varna to see the night life !
