We got our residence visas in 2004, they cost 740.000.000 (740 ytl, aprox £300) this lasts for 2 years.
A lot of people do go over to Rhodes to renew their visa, but having a residence permit gives you more freedom and independance as it is needed for a number of things such as setting up phone lines etc.
