We ordered chicken on our third night at the hotel and were told there was none available due to a shortage - this in itself being caused by the fact that the restaurants could only buy Goan produced chicken and were not importing any from other parts of India because of bird flu. As we were about to choose something else the bar manager insisted on making a phone call and then announced that he was able to get chicken for us. An hour later it still hadn't come but he begged us to wait as it was coming. Sure enough, five minutes later one of the waiters came rushing up the path carrying a plastic bag with what looked like a chicken inside. Another hour later we queried what was happening and said that we didn't mind having something else really ( the sight of chicken in the bag had put us off a bit). It then emerged that the chicken in the bag was actually frozen and they were trying to defrost it. At this we tried to explain that we really would rather have something else but the lovely bar manager, who we fully understood was going out of his way to please us, assured that it was ok and almost ready. By the time it did come it looked ok but tasted like rubber and we couldn't eat it at all. The following night we ate at a different place and ordered a chicken dish . Although there was no talk of shortage we did note a very small amount of chicken in the dish so we did wonder. The following night I decided to have goan fish curry rather than chicken then ended up with Delhi Belly which put me out of action for 3 days. I'm ashamed to say that, following our chicken and fish troubles I ate neither again throughout the holiday and virtually lived on omelettes and veges. They were good though !!
