Hi denbodenn,

...an excursion to Egypt....

Are you sure you mean Egypt? It would be a pretty long excursion!

At the very least, you'd need to go through Turkey, Syria & Israel to get to Egypt from Bulgaria.

Hi Baldur

Yes, I thought that initially. In the Balkan holiday brochure, under excursions it states, '.... Local boat trips. By coach or air to Istanbul and by air to Cairo and Sofia.'
It would probably work out too expensive, but I would like to take the opportunity of taking my family to Cairo for a couple of days. Any thoughts ?

Hi denbodenn,

The Varna Airport destinations page doesn't even show Egypt as a served destination.

The Sofia Airport website shows Hemus Air as flying to Cairo, but only scheduled at 10 p.m. on Fridays between 05.11.2005 - 19.3.2006 at the moment, tickets are not available for booking on their website.

I would tend to consider such a trip a non-starter, unless Balkan Holidays can advise you differently, both in terms of potential cost and the potential logistical nightmare of actually getting there & back within the period of a holiday.

Hi denbodenn :wave

I have been taking a look about the net and it appears that the Cairo trip is a 2/3 day trip by air.

It seems as thought it gets booked via your rep in the resort, there are also mentions of it being bookable (cheaper) via tour outlets in the resort.

So far I cannot find any exact details or prices, but I will keep looking.

Hi

Just a word about what Baldur said

maybe Balkans are doing it themselves with their own planes.Balkans arrivals and departures aren't on the Varna airport website which is strange.

Hi, not even showing a flight number on Gatwick departures for Varna or Bourgas for summer season. Tony

Hi

Thanks all for taking the time to look into this. I will do a bit more research myself. I notice now when looking through the Balkan brochure, that it mentions flying to Cairo on page 40, (under St Konstantine), yet there is no mention of this excursion under any other Bulgarian destination. It's maybe a misprint !

Many thanks again.

This Cairo excursion is a new one on us and we've never noticed it before, being advertised anywhere by any travel company.

I would caution not to rely upon it being available, because it will most likely be reliant on adequate numbers of people wanting to go - a good let out clause for it not taking place.

I have seen the Cairo trip mentioned for several different Bulgarian resorts on various web pages, so it may be possible that it would be a combined trip made up from guests in many resorts.

It must be a new thing as I don't remember seeing it advertised when we were there.

I have e-mailed Balkan Holidays for details of the Cairo excursion - will post any reply that I receive.

Thanks again for all the info....

Baldur, I will eagerly await the reply to your email from Balkan.(something I should have thought of doing myself!).

Just an update - I have still not received, to date, the courtesy of a reply from Balkan Holidays.

Hi Baldur,

I put an excursion to Egypt in the category of a 'Bulgarian dream'. I could of course be wrong!

I seem to recall that for years Balkan Holidays advertised in the brochure and on hotel notice boards a Black Sea cruise to Istanbul, but whenever we enquired the ship wasn't running.

It worries me that some people could be building a holiday around the idea of a visit to Egypt, I don't want them to be disappointed.

I tend to agree - a return flight from Sofia to Israel with Bulgaria Air is 684.04 BGN [approx. £242.78] per adult, so one presumes that Egypt would be somewhere in the same 'ballpark' - allowing for hotel accommodation, even with a tour operator's buying power, makes me think that a few days in Cairo would probably cost nearly as much as booking a week's holiday there from the UK, with the likes of lastminute.com.

Baldur
