Must admit, I used to hate mobiles when they first came out, but now find them so convenient! I've got a disabled Dad and Son, and need to contact them, and more importantly, they need to be able to contact me at all times, even on holiday, so a mobile is pretty near indispensible for us!...The cost of using them abroad is going to come down...it certainly needs too...but lets face it, in
future ALL phones will be Mobiles, the days of the Landline are well and truelly numbered...it wont be too far away when we laugh about how we used to have a phone attached to a wire!!...We will have the same phone to use at home or on the move!..I try to keep mine on vibrate whenever possible, because I still get annoyed hearing them ring everywhere, but I suppose this is one drawback to set against the convenience of them. Life is always a double-edged sword isnt it, the pro's on one side, matched by the con's on the other, only by getting the two sides in balance, can we cut a striaght path forward in life! Crikey I'm getting too phylosophical (spell)? now...I'm off before me head explodes!!

Cheers for that BHIC, I'd heard mutterings about it a while ago, but had'nt read anything about it before. I see with that service you do need a broadband connection. Its definately a step in the right direction I suppose....having said that I suffer an allergic reaction when thinking about BT!...argghhh...even typing the initials brings me out in a rash!!

Just returned this morning .Got sorted with a vodafone sim card which cost me 30 euros which included 15 euros credit and a 6 euro eurodirect card which gives 12 hours talktime back to a uk landline number!!. This is the best deal at the minute. You ring the access number (vodafone charge you 40 cents for the first minute then the rest of the hour is free) which is a spanish number and they connect you internationally. Only need to top up once per year with vodafone.

Sorry for putting a new post on about this topic. I did find a thread on here about phones but i could not find the button to reply back to post so that is why i have put a new post on again. What i was wandering is if i take my Vodaphone mobile with me and get a panish sim card will it be cheaper for me to phone back home. And will it still be the same cost to a different mobile network work to what i am using. As i would love to take my phone with me so i have privicy in my hotel room to let the kids call back home to talk to grandparents once or twice in the fornight that we will be away.

Sharon - I dont know anything about Spanish Sim Cards but others using this forum do so you should get some answers. However I too use vodafone, I'm on PAYG and use the Passport service. This means that to receive a call whilst abroad I'm charged a flat fee of 75p nothing more no matter how long the call, and if I make a call say back to the UK, I'm charged the exact same taffif as i use at home plus 75p. Its very easy to budget using this service but there maybe cheaper ways, but you would have to pay for a spanish sim then top up that sim, depends I suppose on how often you go, how often you will use phone whilst there, and whether you want to mess about with another phone number and having to let other people know your temporary number. I'd rather have the convenience of keeping my same number, whilst knowing the cost of each call will be reasonable, and that what Vodafone passport does for me, but as i say horses for courses. Was just wandering when you take a pay as you go phone abroad when you check your credit ballance on the phone does it tell you how much you have in british money or in euros and can you take your own pay as you go swip card with you and top it up there or what . I am planning to top it before i go but i was just wandering if you need to top up when you are there how do you go about that and where do you go to top it up

It should give you your Credit Balance just as it does in the UK, ie in GBP Sterling, but be aware, if checking your balance in the UK is normally free, it might not be free when overseas. You MIGHT be charged a flat fee each time you check.

You can take your own PAYG Mobile, but in as far as I am aware, it is not possible to top it up with credit, so make sure you have swiped sufficient credit to last you for your holiday. You can do this by checking with your Mobile Service provider what the costs are to send and receive text messages, and to make calls back to the UK.

Bare in mind, you MAY be charged to receive Text Messages on some Networks. Most Networks will charge you to receive incomming calls. You are also charged to access Voicemail where it us usually free here in the UK with most Networks.

Check with your Service provider by logging onto their relevant Website where you should find all the Info you need.

Whilst I was away recently in Beni, my credit was getting low so I rang Virgin, (I am on pay as you go) and registered my switch card with them. When I needed more credit, I just rang 789 went through the procedure of topping up and it was done, easy as that. I don't bother using my top up card anymore, I always use this method instead and haven't had any problems.

The Switch card is definately the most convenient way to top up as Sue says, and you can do that either before you go, or indeed whilst you are abroad. But if you dont want to use that method Sharon, I seem to recall you being on Vodafone (Correct me if wrong), if so then there is a Vodafone shop just off Plaza Triangular in the Old Town where you could top up using your existing swipe card.

If you go into the inside market to a stall called Andy`s Phone Shop....he does top up for the following Uk networks....
O2.
T.Mobile.
Orange
Vodaphone.

Thanks Sanji for that information but i do intend to put in at least £20.00 in my phone so i think shat should be enough for the fortnight it is only for the kids to talk to their grandparents 1 or 2 during the holiday and for when i am ready to come back home for my dad to be at the airport to collect us

Yes, I am on Virgin PAYG and I also top up in this manner whilst overseas. However, please keep an eye on your spending if you opt for this method, as because it is so easy you can end up spending quite a lot. I spent over £70 in phone tops ups via my debit card whilst in Benidorm last October.

Also bare in mind that if you buy phone top up cards you may be charged 'tax' and therefore you might not get say £10 in credit, more like £8.50. I'm not saying that is the case with all Networks but it is with some. I speak from personal experience.

Hi whilst in Beni last year i spent over £50 in a few weeks and i was only Texting, i go back in 2 weeks time so it's good to know that i can get top up cards in the undercover market, didn't know that so does anyone know how much it is to send and recieve a text in Spain.
