we stayed at the Tropical Sol Apts in Sao Joao . walked to the old town, took about half an hour. A few times just got the "wally trolley" goes to old town and back regularly until about 3 in the morning, we used to get it back about 1 am
cab will only be about 4 euros from there to the old town too.
