ah the perennial question... you can always negotiate a price with one of the many hire places but remember the following

1] you will usually be charged for a full tank of fuel whether you use it or not

2] check any vehicle for road worthiness before you accept it

3] ensure you have full waiver insurance or they will find some extras to charge you for when its returned

4] above all DO NOT accept the first price no matter what time of year if they have cars on the forecourt a deal has to be done

5] remember the roads in general are not up to any particular standard, speed limit do apply and cameras are being installed, the blood alcohol level has recently been reduced, THE GREEKS CANT DRIVE a bold statement but as a former road safety instructor one i feel is valid,, and finally any convictions received will under the EEC harmonization regs be added to your UK license

as for times you will need a day for the troodos if you wish to include a couple of monasteries

a day for Lemesos and the roman theater etc

but the north depends on what you want to see it will take about 4 to 5 hrs to get to the pan handle without stopping

How long is a piece of string?

Paphos - Troodos:
This would depend which route you took. Some of the routes, the roads are being upgraded and there are long stretches where the road has been ripped up for widening and resurfacing. This will add to the journey time as the sensible speed here is about 20 mph.
My usual route is from the B6 (old Paphos - Limassol road) turn of at the Asprokremmos Dam. This is the worst for roadworks but I still use it.
Another nice route up is from the motorway at Avdimou via Pachna and Vouni with the donkey sanctuary.
The route from the motorway via Kantou is, I think, relatively roadworks-free, but longer.

Paphos - Limassol, stopping at sights:
There are many sights of interest on this route.
The Temple of Aphrodite
Aphrodite's Rock
Pissouri village
Sanctuary of Apollon Yialis
Kourion amphitheatre
Kolossi Castle
Lady's Mile Beach
Which ones you decide to stop at will obviously dictate the time the trip takes.

Paphos - the north:
Firstly, the terms and conditions for the hire car will almost certainly preclude taking the car to the 'Occupied Areas'! You will not be covered by insurance. You can buy insurance at the checkpoint at around a tenner, but bear in mind, if you have an accident and the car is undrivable you will probably only be returned to the checkpoint, or if the vehicle breaks down you will not have any cover for that.
It is 20 years since I was 'over the green line' but Kyrenia harbour was worth a visit, as was Famagusta.

The above excursions are all 'do-able' in a day, but the north trip would not allow for a lot of sightseeing.

Thanks a lot for the advise.
I think we may be better off just going on an organised trip with the travel rep to the North, just incase? I believe that Thomas Cook do one that takes you to Salamis, Famagusta, Kyrenia and Bellapais.
So it may just be best to hire a car for 2-3 days and travel around more locally.
I think i have been advised to go with Rent-A-Car I think it may have been, in Paphos? I will look on my previous posts to check.
