My sister and myself are planning to visit the Amazon River next May and was wondering if anyone out there has already been and can give us some info on their experiances, pics would be great, anything really, do's and don'ts, what to wear, what not to wear ect ect..

I did a an Amazon jungle/river tour in 2003, I stayed three miles away from the nearest town Iquitos (which is lovely btw) I can highly recommend the lodge I stayed in which is called Loving Lights Amazon lodge http://www.junglelodge.com/intro.html Among other things we did pirahna fishing, Caiman hunting, midnight walks, camped in the jungle played football with tribeswomen and it cost $130 all inclusive for a week!!
If you go to Iquitos you can book a cruise/lodge for next day and you will get much cheaper prices than booking online. ask for Christian Ruiz around town and when booking tell him you found out from Lisa and say CHUD he will give you discount it was his nickname when we met him in 2003 - he is a great guy and will give you the best deals available.

What a fabulous tour that must have been! Not sure I would be brave enough to attempt it but I wish I could! Did it feel a truely unique experience or did you feel there was any commercialism creeping in?
No it was absolutely amazing, I travelled south america for six months and the five days I spent in the jungle were the best time!!
It was so surreal, to be traipsing through the jungle with spider monkeys and sloths in the trees overhead, snakes and spiders on the ground (I felt so safe with our guides as they noticed the slightest movement and pointed out everything to us) and just wonderful beautiful scenery all around. We swam with the rare pink river dolphins but I got bitten by a fish and had to get out before the pirahnas noticed!!! It wasnt commercial at all, in fact we didnt see any other "gringos" the whole time we were there, just the guide his family and the local tribespeople.
One day we went to play football with the ladies from the tribe and the ground was so slippy we couldnt stand up, but they were brilliant, they laughed at us so much and enjoyed our company as we joined in with everything, it turned into a big party with the locals playing instruments and us swimming in the amazon with the children - best time of my life!!!
