Thats great news... Thanks for all your suggestions!

Sounds like Sousse is the place to go!

Are the clubs expensive?

Also, do you know if there are any nice bars and restuarants in Jasmine, where our hotel is?

I've read thats a nice resort but not much has been said with regard to entertainment outside the hotel complexes?

EGR xx

:?: tell you the truth i`ve never heard of Jasmine???

never went their...

basically the club entrance system in tunisia is weird....

because 4 of us are door supervisors in the uk we didnt enter the club straight away we chatted to the bouncers made friends with them then they ley us in free,, but what we got told is the clubs are generally free to enter for tourists, if they charge you ask to have a look around the club first to see whats it like cuz it may be rammed or it may be dead depending on what day you go....

becuase of the amount we were drinking etc etc we use to spend about 200dinars a night each so about £100 a night on alcohol but i think it worked out that much becuase we use to buy the whole bottle instead of shots....

it is basically cheaper than the uk though, so its all good.....

your lucky i wish i was going again
if you get a chance go quad biking for £12 for 2 hours you cant go wrong you see some crazy views of tunisia but watch out for the bushes my mate crashed not once but twice into the bushes

Dear Pablo and friends,

Jasmine is near Hammamet, and from what I understand it is quite a new resort hence why i think its quiet compared to others..

Sounds like you had a ball on your hols! I hope your friend was alright after his collision! Its reassuring to know that theres plenty to do and see.. I had this vision of a quiet, lazy, beach holiday but from the sounds of it, I think we are goning to have a lot of fun!

I am getting very excited now and counting down the days! 4 to go!!! :D

Oh one more thing (sorry to keep asking so many questions!), whats the dress code like? Many people have suggested that when you leave the hotel complex you should try and cover up to avoid being hassled but I hope thats not the case when your out partying?! I read your comments on the beautiful and shall we say 'friendly' Tunisian women, what kind of things did they wear? Ha ha i know thats a really crazy question to ask but a girl has to know what to pack!! He he

Are you planning to return to Tunisia?

i will return to that place one day but my next holiday in august is miami or mexico.....

dont get me wrong it aint nothing like a hardcore raving holiday it is quite but its what u make of it.. before we went we thought we had made the biggest mistake ever by going tunisia, but we made sure we had a laugh.... thats what you gotta do...

as for dress codes lads get away with anything
so do girls really dont belive the hype that you hear that girls will get harassed if they go out in skirts its bulls...
we went out with 2 girls we met in the hotel they were proper ibiza party hardcore ravers from the uk like us wee during the day when we use to go sousse or jus on a general mission they would were shorts hot pant thingys or short short oh my gosh short skirts with just a bikini top mans did look but none of them ever did anything....

clubbing wise they would again oh my gosh  wear mega short skirts with just a vest thingy if you no what i mean

but males in the clubs wear normal polo t shirts, shirts, jeans with shoes or nice trainers..

but tunisian girls would agian wear skirts jeans, they would dress how you would in england, it was so funny when we actually saw the ladies becuase people in the uk told us all the girls have to be covered up head to toe so we expected little or no girls at all but it turned out to be in our favour

remember if you going tunis the capital go a bit smarter cuz everyone their wears jeans shirts etc even during the day
no shorts or anything you will look proper odd if you wear that their....

Hi EGR,

Just to fill you in on the geography of Tunisia - Pablo and his pals were staying in Sousse but I gather you are staying in Yasmine Hammamet? These 2 resorts are a good 2 hours drive apart - partying the night away in Sousse will not be an option for you.

Also, I would take his advice re dress codes with a pinch of salt. Tunisian women don't go round covered from head to toe but they don't go round in skimpy clothes showing a lot of flesh either. I walked through the souk in Tunis behind a group of British women who were with their menfolk but dressed in shorts and bikini tops. They were very distressed not just because they were constantly being stared at but also because they kept getting touched-up by many of the local men around them in the crowded streets. And I'm not just talking about pats on the bottom but their breasts being grabbed. It could all have turned very nasty because their husbands/boyfriends, perhaps understandably, became very aggressive in trying to stop this happening. Far better to respect local mores in the first place.

I haven't particularly wanted to raise the issue before when on another thread Pablo remarked that the local women he met in the clubs were 'easy', it did cross my mind then that the only local women who would frequent clubs unaccompanied would probably be prostitutes. I'm even more sure of this probability now given his remarks about the way they dressed - Tunisian women do not wear burquas but nor do they dress like UK holidaymakers do either. And whilst alcoholic drinks are not always cheap in Tunisia, 200 dinars per head per night buys an awful lot of alcohol even at Tunisian hotel bar prices! Sad to say boys I think that you were enjoying the company of bar girls and paying through the nose for it via the inflated drinks' prices you were paying. It's the oldest trick in the book for fleecing male tourists and I'm saddened to hear that is now happening even in Tunisia.

SM

PS The thought has now just occurred to me that perhaps Pablo is a Tunisian 'wide boy' who has a vested interest in trying to convince male European tourists that they should expect to spend £100 per night per head on booze and female tourists that they should go around displaying as much bare flesh as possible :-)

Hi EGR

My advice stay away from Sousse its the biggest dump in Tunisia you will get hassled by the locals going out in short skirts as did my wife. I have been to Tunisia loads of times and i totally agree with the last post from SM.

Tunisia is NOT Ibiza!!!.

Dear SM & Daveyboy

Thank you very much for replying to my earlier messages... You can rest assured that regardless of pablos comments I was certainly not planning on hitting the clubs in Sousse wearing shorts and bikini tops!

I am very open minded and I'm totally respectful of local cultures, hence why I was asking what to wear in the first place.. Thank you for being honest and painting what I am sure is a more 'realsitic' picture of Tunisian customs.

As, I originally mentioned my boyfriend and I are going to Tunisia for the first time and are really looking forward to having a fantactic relaxing and enjoyable holiday. It is his 31st birthday whilst we are out there and trust me, we are not looking for an Ibiza style holiday whats so ever. I just wanted some advice as to good restuarants, or any 'little gems' that would help me make his birthday more special. Of course we will like to have a drink or two but I can say hand on heart that we will not be drinking bottles of spirits!

We are going to Tunisia to not only have a fabulous holiday together but to hopefully experience and see some of the amazing things that it can offer..

Thanks again, EGR x

Those British women were in a souk????????? What were they thinking??? Even with a man I think any woman who wears bikini tops and mini shorts in markets and shops around Tunisia is out of her mind!!!! In Ireland and France walking in shops in shorts and bikinis would be viewed very badly in a shop and you would possibly be asked to leave!! never mind Tunisia!!!! Why dress like this in a muslim country when you would not do it at home!! I would say that shorts and miniskirts anywhere in Tunisia are a complete no no!!! Even in France any girls who dress like this would be regarded as prostitutes so can you imagine what they think in Tunisia!!!!!!!
EGR you are dead right do not do it!!!!!!!!! Its a muslim country at the end of the and they are so kind as to let us experiance their wonderful country. Tunisia sounds like a great country full of history and culture and not a haven for louts and binge drinkers!!!!
Just dress respectfully and you should be fine!!!

I'm so glad to hear it and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. I agree with SM - the Sousse Pablo allegedly experienced is not one most of us would recognise so either he was taken for a ride or he is embroidering the tale.

I totally agree with everybody's comments and I am glad that I have been given an insight into what Tunisia is really like!

I lived in Malaysia for a year and therefore totally aware of Mulim cultures and customs. Like stated by SM the Tunisian people have been good enough to allow us to share their beautiful country, the least we can do is show them respect in return! So don't worry everyone, I will be dressing appropriately!!! :)

SM - I was wondering if you have information on the resort of Jasmine or any resorts near by (that aren't 2 hrs away!) that are worth visiting?

Have a look at Adventures of Tunisia on :

http://lexicorient.com/tunisia/index.htm which gives you a lot of useful information on the country.

I've never heard of Jasmine, and think you probably mean Hammanet Yasmine, but that is not specifically mentioned on the above site.

Ok thanks for that! I'll have a good gander at the website... :)

Hi EGR,

Re restaurants, I'm not too sure of places in Yasmine, but there are 2 I'd recommend for a special / romantic meal out. Both are in Hammamet (as opposed to Yasmine), but this will only be a few minutes and a few dinar from where you're staying. These are - Chez Achour and Cascades. If you contact them ahead they may even make it a bit special by decorating the table a bit for you etc. I know for sure Cascades did this as I was there one evening when a couple where celebrating an anniversary or something similar.

Not sure if Cascades has a website or email address but the phone no. is (00216) 72 280 826.

Some hotels will also make a big effort for you if you ask nicely (and presumably pay / tip heavily!). A couple at the Bel Azur had their anniversary during their holiday and the restaurant arranged a special meal with a table set up on the beach.

Have a great holiday and hope your boyfriend enjoys his birthday, whatever you decide to do.

A.x

Lord knows Janajory! Many people seem to think that a different set of rules apply because they are on holiday. It's not just that most of the population in Tunisia are Moslem but as you say, the streets of towns and cities in the UK are hardly filled with women dressed for the beach! And dressed like that they would attract just as much attention on the streets of London or Edinburgh or most European cities.

A friend of mine dressed just the same way for day trip in Lisbon when we were on holiday in Portugal and didn't get any sympathy form the rest of us when she complained about being touched up on a crowded commuter tram! Surrounded by people in business suits on their way home from work well, yes, she looked like a very different sort of 'working girl'. My general rule is that if you wouldn't wear it to go shopping in Tesco then it's unlikely to be acceptable street wear anywhere :-)
